He thought it was just because of the Mako infusion process that the rest of Solider goes through. It does make them incredibly powerful, but it isn't nearly as effective. Jenova is a being that specialized in absorbing Lifestream and because of that, the process was many times more effective for Sephiroth, especially because he was injected with the cells prenatal, so his body wasn't constantly trying to fight them off.

The Midgar Zolom's AI is really simple. It will counter every attack with it's bite, which will probably deal 1k damage regardless to you.
At half HP, it will raise up and the next attack made against it will be it's knock out attack.
When it is at 1/4th HP, it will counter with Beta.
What you want to do is use toxic sludge to poison it, because it's not considered an attack, it won't counter. You will want to get enough HP to survive BETA to get it for your enemy skill. After that, just catch a Chocobo to cross.

Sephiroth was described as a pretty caring person. He wasn't just a bloody war vet. The mission to the Nibel reactor and seeing the Monsters get made from Mako, he started to consider himself less then human and then when he saw the notes about Jenova being a Cetra, he broke and thought himself MORE then human.
Sephiroth at that point was tired of the fighting, he didn't want to just be a tool for war and that broke him. He couldn't see anything but the cold war like nature of humanity and so he thought to free his 'mother' and to rule over them.
Then Cloud fucked his shit up and he learned the actual truth from the planet and that just fucked him up more and gave him a god complex.
The sad part is that because of the nature of Jenova, it can't fully desolve in the Lifestream and the same is true of Sephiroth. In current Canon, he is mostly fractured. He understands who he is, but his memories are spread out through the whole of the life stream. That core consciousness will never fade. He will always be a threat to the planet, finding new ways to return to life.
