If it was the sewer, you use the gate switch to go 1 - 2 - 3 - 2. 4 is optional and just has some ammo/health.

Steam version works with a bunch of fan patches or you could google DarkXL, a fan enhancement that brings it up to speed and fixes all the big problems while allowing higher resolutions and adding a few visual bells/whistles.

You can get it from GOG with Dosbox all set up, and it works fine.

I recall some of the weapons not working and some of the enemy types not being implemented. I also felt that something was way off with the game because I was able to breeze through it with just the repeater rifle. Dark troopers? No problem, just stun lock them with the repeater rifle. I haven't played the game in its original form or in Dosbox, but I doubt the game is supposed to be as easy as I found it to be.
