I fell down a huge Mortal Kombat 2 hole five or so years ago and downloaded/emulated all the versions I could to compare and contrast.
Obviously--you're assumption that a native PC version of a title will likely always be the preferred version in terms of speed, lack of bugs and comparability is right on-- but to die-hard fans of a certain game or series, merits exists in peaking into obscure or forgotten editions.

I'm amazed the original Xbox is so notoriously hard to emulate. I never thought we'd see the day we'd have decent Saturn emulation, and now we have pretty great Saturn emulation, though there's only one emulator and it's a bit of a pain to use.
Xbox is the new holy grail of emulation, the new Saturn. I hope they crack the code one day.

Correct me if I am mistake (and given the clusterfuck-ery that is American copyright laws), but I was always under the assumption the emulator was 100% legal to possess. You must rip your own BIOS and ROMS/ISO/etc are obviously illegal if you pirate them.
I'm surprised Microsoft has a legal leg if my above statements are true. But given the small hobbyist development that birth most emulators, the mere threat of legal action might cause they to abandon ship and scatter.
