So I bought Quake 4. Why does it look like shit? Nothing like Doom 3. And that's 'everything ultra'.
I had this problem too, i think theres something in the ini you have to change. I cant recall it exactly because its been a couple of years since i did it.

OP here. I've found the option that fucks everything up, "Force ambient light". Without it, it looks alright.

That is what you get when you click everything on in the settings menu, it's something to do with "forced lighting" option, don't remember it myself but try turning off similar options

Your textures are too low res and do you even have bump mapping on?
Is there any way to get 1440p support for this game? I tried google and said methods but none of them worked

Google quake 4 patch 1.4.2 and dl it. That should fix the resolution problems, but I thought the steam version had it installed already?
Also here is a copy/paste on how to fix the textures.
I found a fix for those who are having similar issues.
Go into your:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake 4\q4base\Quake4Config.cfg
And edit the following lines:
seta image_downSize "0"
seta image_downSizeBump "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "0"
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_useCompression "0"
seta image_useNormalCompression "0"
seta r_renderer "best"
Make sure to save the changes before exiting.
