Nah, the Black Ops arc is the best out of the series.

Iunno, I still loved 3.
The Black Ops arc, in my opinion at least, has the most engaging storyline and gameplay along with visuals.
Not saying that the other games are bad, though, I really liked everything up to MW2.

true. Similarly Vendetta was the worst mission on WaW. Tank mission was pretty crap too but mostly due to fucked up steering
organic gameplay > following setpieces

At least the plot to CoD4 made sense to an extent. There was a clear villain who had a motivation you could understand and didn't throw retarded shit at you 24/7.
>>
>>319998058
I remember my first playthrough of it though and it did feel pretty intense. It's a shame it is so scripted but that does add to the idea that you are just following orders. They should never have retread those steps in later instalments.

>>319998391

The equivalent stealth missions in MW2 were far better. In the first segment early in the game, there's no one to hold your hand and tell you where to go. If you get spotted and trigger an alert, it's not instant game over and you can lose the enemy if you remain hidden long enough ala MGS. In the second segment, Price leads the way but lets you choose what you want to do when encountering an enemy patrol. In both segments, you can go loud, shooting everyone you see and you'll still be able to proceed, provided that you are skilled enough to deal with overwhelming odds.
>>
>>319998758
What did you expect
Did you think you were actually invisible to the game that knows what happens all the time?

>>
>>319997059
yes
>>
>>319998927
>invisible to the game
invisible to enemies.
I'll explain how it works:
While game itself is all-knowing for obvious reasons, AI spotting is limited by data game gives it to process. This includes pieces like visibility cones, cover, concealment, noise levels, and variety of coefficients to make their spotting as believeble as possible.
Stealth games (good stealth games) have no issues with making sneaking possible without scripting every enemy on level. Even non-stealth games like ArmA, 7.62 High Calibre or first Far Cry have working stealth.
>>
>Simon says go stand next to the burned out car
>Simon says crawl on your belly towards the tank
>Simon says shoot the man in the tower
>Do anything you're not told to and you'll fail the mission

It was a series of enemy set-ups and linear paths, just like any other mission in those games, it just gave the illusion of stealth as well.
So I guess I can't really fault it for the tense atmosphere it had, but it's only impressive to the mainstream fps babbies that didn't know any better.
>>
>>319999713
Funny how you mention the first Far Cry where enemies spotted you across the island through all foliage
Because simulating sight is actually very fucking hard. Especially in CoD enemies do not have sight, this is obvious on veteran difficulty as you see enemies pointing their guns at you in advance when they enter a certain "battle stance" because they are not firing based on sight, but your data location.

Stealth games in general operate on abstractions that only work in tight spaces.

I've been wondering if there are any experimental games that actually use computer vision techniques on scenes rendered from the enemies' point of view for target recognition. Sounds like an interesting experiment to make.
>>
>>319997059
I can and I do. It was the mission that convinced me the game was going to be scripted shit from start to finish and stopped playing the series indefinitely.
>>
>>320000092

"BOOM"

"THAT GOT TO HURT"

"DON'T ATTACK FRIENDLIES"
>>
>>319999860
>Far Cry where enemies spotted you across the island through all foliage
They could once you've been spotted. It's very simple, really. Their LOS is calculated properly, but they will find you even if there's only 5 pixels undisturbed by vegetation. And if you've been already spotted, they know where to look, which is why you should relocate second you hear them shouting, so they have to detect you again.
Playing ninja, by switching between stealth and agression, is perfectly possible unlike say Far Cry 2 where alarmed enemies will always know where to look, even if they didn't see where did you go
>>
CoD2 > CoD > CoD4 > CoD5 > the rest
>>
>>320000110

Minimizing the use of enemy respawns is one of the immediately noticeable improvements MW2's campaign introduced in the series. They restricted its use to only certain scenarios like the airport or the Russian airfield base where you're supposed to be making a getaway.
>>
>>320000772

Well you clearly have a different Far Cry 2 version than me. That never happened on PC or 360 for me. That's how I play too - sneaking around
>>
>>319997059

I really fucking hate the phrase "The shit".

I cannot count how many times I skim something and then had to reread it to make sure they were saying "is shit" or "is the shit"
>>
>>320000116
there's few issues with that
for example how much of body should be considered "visible enough". AI in ArmA 3 has bullshit spotting in thick vegetation, because it will clearly spot foot or elbow sticking from behind tree, when human player would miss it in mess of shapes between them.
At same time player would have much easier time spot characteristic round shape of helmet, even if technically smaller.

It was cool, but super scripted and linear.
>>
>>320001230
>should be considered "visible enough".
You'd obviously have to experiment a lot, figure out the best values and filters to use. But my point is for there not to be a special significance to the player's avatar. The AI doesn't get to cast rays at the player or however that works, all it gets are images. It has to figure out whether it's looking at the player or just a tree from those images alone.

Nice touch.

What CoD 4 did right, and the reason that it should be remembered, was distilling the hopes and fears of the world we lived in (past tense because it was pre-Arab Spring) into a format where we could all be the badass hero out there saving the western world from all the ay-rabs and ruskies. I personally disagree with some of the political sentiment, but it did redefine the way a generation viewed warfare and global politics. I really doubt that another game will ever be as influential at forming the worldview of an entire generation

Wait never mind, I thought he had a wire. he was just a falseflag to make America look bad. I was thinking of something else.

CoD campaigns are like an action movie, they are worth playing. But still they have too many flaws, like limited weapon selection, being short, no replayability value and of course mediocre stories, so it's not worth paying for them.
