Then go back and try out RE so you can see the differences, and enjoy the camp. It's definately a classic for a reason.
People will probably tell you to play the gamecube remake first. Don't. A huge part of enjoying that game comes from having beaten the original. It's meant for people who played the original from that game's creator, so don't spoil it for yourself.
You should probably emulate the original Resident Evil release. The director's cut has some pretty shaky alterations.

The first game is a really fun exploration and atmosphere experience that went a long way to defining a genre, it hasn't "aged badly" into shit or whatever, it's a really well made game.

The horrible music is in the second release of the Director's Cut, called Director's Cut Dual Shock. The version you'll want is pic related.
ORIGINAL. The sounds and dark and gloomy environment really helped shaped this game. The remake is good, but it doesn't have the same effect as the original. Unless you prefer graphics over gameplay. I really don't like the crimson heads in the remake though.

I don't care what other people say, if you're a total RESI noob, REmake is the best way to start. It also renders the original totally obsolete.

DS port has BETTER graphics and animations than the PS1 version, a lot of exclusive content, and numerous small improvements to game play (360 turn, Quick-knife like in Re4, random headshots like in REmake...). It is arguably the best version of the classic RE1
