From what I understand (going by Dragon Age by the way), Blood Magic is far too powerful, has an extremely high chance of backfiring and causing trouble and lowers the users resistance to demons substantially more than regular magic.

I preferred the regular cannons, as the claw was less mobile, chewed through a bit more HP and was fire element, but you're right I totally forgot about that dlc and how much more powerful it was

In a thaumaturgical setting, Blood Magic is always deadly, requiring nigh endless quantities of sacrifices and requires the exploitation are large swathes of land/people/literal thousand of farm animals to yield the results people seek.
In generic "use life instead of mana" fantasy settings, it's not a big deal, since you just get life gain on hit and gain as much if not more than you spend to kill the enemies and loot their bodies.
It's dirty magic.

Because drawing upon your blood is costly and makes you weaker, thus there is strong incentive to use the blood of other people. Hence those that use blood magic tends to eventually start draining other people out of convenience.
