Ape Escape doesn't work well with handheld controls.And I don't like the voices in OTL, say what you will about the PS1 game,but it was laughably bad to the point that I liked them, where in OTL I don't like Spike's voice at all, and you play him for the whole game.

Well they haven't given you a legitimate option to acquire the actual game, so emulate it. It's 100% their fault and there's nothing you can do about it for the time being. On The Loose is not a viable substitute.
