Why do stuns exist in this game? As far as i'm aware, their

Why do stuns exist in this game?
As far as i'm aware, their only purpose is to make it easier for experienced players to beat the shit out of new players, since literally the only time i've ever seen it happen was when I was getting completely bodied.
Stuns only exist to give good players a free taunt and Ultra Finish when fighting new players, right?

And the game has plenty of comeback mechanics to deal with that.

it does. if you've stunned your opponent you get to hit them with another combo. it's a lot easier to avoid stun than you think, literally all you have to do is block. in fact when you successfully avoid being attacked, the stun gauge (invisible in sf4) reduces passively.

Gief can only do that if he hits with his Neutral jump fierce (the headbutt) because it deals 600 stun. Stun is a way to make certain normals more powerful without directly increasing the damage they do. This can create interesting strategic decisions:

Gief hits you with his neutral headbutt, you know if he gets 1-2 good hits on you, you'll be stunned. So now you absolutely have to get away. The Gief player knows this, so now he can make reads based on knowing your desire to get away and not be stunned. But then of course, if you're brave, you can know what Gief would do to prevent a backdash or jump back, and go on the offense to counter that specifically.

Thanks to the stun levels on that one move, getting hit by it changes the dynamic of the game instantly for a few seconds. It's applications like these that make stun a good mechanic in my eyes.

if your timing is good you'll still be safe because you'll be gone by the time they DP. the only thing they did was remove the invincibility. if you have issues with this you can also do a safe jump. besides DPs got nerfed in V compared to IV anyway.
