I find that depressing stories that are well written actually help seeing the world in a better light. For example I've had trouble with alcoholism and drugs and Max Payne 3 really helped me feel a little better, it's like experience another persons downfall and understanding that he is still human and probably even more human than people who have never suffered makes you feel better.
Maybe Depression Quest. I think that was the whole point of that game.

RPGs are pretty good at this. A good one gets you really invested into the characters but you end up getting kinda sad when the journeys over knowing that your adventures with these characters is over.

Well, I remember watching Game of Thrones while being suspected of havingass cancerand it didn't help much at all. Hell, the day I saw Oberyn vs Gregor Clegane fight I got so depressed (even though I have read the books before and knew it was comming) that I was thinking about nothing but the possible death coming. It was fucking horrible, fucking nightmare.
My guess is that sad story must have at least some good - or at least bittersweet - ending, otherwise it will only make things worse.
