Fuck the Lost City.
>>
Was there ever a relation between the Mages and the Pagans? Why are the mages so poorly integrated in the lore? You'd think that with such powers they'd have something to do with everything, like the Hammers do.
>>
>>319892128
Mages were never really elaborated upon besides them being a sort of sect from abroad.

Oh, that's right, I forgot about the abroad part.

Imo, the devs should have planted that idea somewhere that Hammers were fiercely opposed to the Mages, and made sure they couldn't establish themselves strongly in The City. There was this necromancer guy in Thief 2, one lone tower in the middle of the city, and it seemed he kept his business secret.
>>
Bafford's mansion is weird by Thief standards. Mostly because this was the first map they designed by someone who usually doesn't design maps if I remember correctly. But it fits in with Bafford being oafish and pretentious.
>>
>>319891168
strangely enough, even though I constantly get lost in Thief, the lost city was an easy to navigate straightforward experience for me
>>
>>319892257
Trail of Blood wasn't really that confusing of a map. The seasonal part was pretty straight forward.
>>
>>319892371
iirc the game said something about people being weary of the mages, but there was no active resistance.

Hammers themselves use magic, so I don't see why they'd be hostile towards the mages.
>>
>>319892128
The mages are basically fantasy Arab wizard monks. They want to be left alone to their studies.
>>
>>319892371
>There was this necromancer guy in Thief 2
I remember that necromancer being referenced in Thief 1 Mage Towers level. I think he was banished from the sect but don't remember much now.

Assassins was where I really got hooked on Thief. The intro sequence was really intense the first time around, and then I entered the mansion through Ramirez's room and thought it would be cool if there was a secret compartment in the fireplace, and there fucking was.

Deadly Shadows hard mode was really frustrating with its loot goals. I stopped playing at the Pagan Hideout because I had to find a tiny jewel hidden between some stones or something.

this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I hated how the hardest part of thief wasn't stealing shit without getting caught, but being constantly lost and having no idea where to go.
>>
>>319893873
>Deadly Shadows hard mode was really frustrating with its loot goals. I stopped playing at the Pagan Hideout because I had to find a tiny jewel hidden between some stones or something.

how the fuck, the fucking loot sparkles
>>
>>319893972
A lot of people hate getting lost. But I enjoy big confusing levels, so long as most areas are different, identifiable, and have easy to find landmarks. Most of the time Thief had variety in levels, but every once in awhile you'd come across a level where every tunnel looked the same.
>>
>>319893972
You bet it's an unpopular opinion. Games you can get lost in are a precious treasure.
>>
>>319894045
It wasn't exactly in a place where I'd look for the loot. I think there was some sort of canal with a giant spider or burrick down there, and the jewels were hidden at the far end of that canal, away from any path through the complex, at which they wouldn't sparkle.
>>
>>319894261

DS doesn't have spiders nor burricks and that level is almost corridor shooter tier
>>
>>319893972
I think it was a fair way of handling things since the AI wasn't super smart. I don't find it very hard to sneak around guards in most stealth games, so combine that with more straightforward levels and it's boring.
But it's understandable why someone wouldn't like it.
>>
>>319894370
Well, there was something down there that discouraged me from exploring, and the place where the loot was found was too out of the way for me.

Combine that with the general off way the engine feels and I wasn't exactly in a mood to continue playing.
>>
So if we gota new Thief game that followed DS it would star Garret desciple from the ending. But would honestly anyone want that? After DS all the magic of the world was destroyed literally and metaphorically

I've just been leaving them to last and then having an honorabu dueru. Guards have difficulty turning around so you can just strafe around them repeatedly until they pass out from 100 wiffle bat strikes to the back of the head.

>>
>>319896890

if you manage to get behind an alerted guard in a relatively dark area (not sure how much but the gem doesn't need to be completely black) you can knock them out with the blackjack. Otherwise, hitting them repeatedly will eventually kill them.
>>
>>319896669
If you hit them on the front, they'll die.
That said, there were a few cases where a guard died while I was bopping him but I figured that was just a case of too many side-bonks and not enough back-bonks.

The other way to do it is to get their attention, have them follow you a distance away, loop around them, turn a corner and just crouch. As soon as you stop running, they lose track of you and start wandering around. Crouch-walk to a nice doorway near where they were originally standing and after a minute, they'll begin to wander back to their original spot. Then the clubbening begins.

I love that there are so many damn fan missions for Thief 1 & 2. I've already got (and will continue to get) alotta mileage from the official campaigns, and the billion FMs let me get even more out of them.
>>
>>319897058
>warship named cetus amicus
>translates to "the friendly whale"
>>
>>319897509
I have about 250 hours between T1 and T2 and I've barely scratched the surface of FMs. It helps that there are so many ways to replay ("normally", then ghosting, iron man, swordsman, 100% loot, etc) so I've ended up playing the same few of them.
>>
>>319896669

also, another way to knock out an alerted guard that is actively chasing you is to close a door in front of him and block it so it won't open all the way when he wants to come through. Part of his body will start clipping through the door and at that point you can just hit them in the face and they will get knocked out.
