Jesus Christ. It's one of the 3 starting weapons, it's not like you have to go out of your way to find it like the drake sword.
I personally picked the cleaver and I find that to be about as useful as the hunters axe given the ridiculous speed of it.

Literally the easiest boss to cheese - stand behind a gravestone and slap his shit in with a good old R2 attack, threaded cane can slap him over the gravestone while he aimlessly runs into it - just occasionally dodge back when he does his bigger attacks
When he turns into wolfy supreme just run up the stairs and down the building again and again occasionally shooting him and lobbing molotovs

Preferably use a serrated weapon (Saw Cleaver/Saw Spear in short mode or Threaded Cane in Whip mode).
When he raises his right arm (the one on your left) shoot him for an easy visceral.
When he rears up on his back legs he's going to do a flurry of attacks with shit tracking, get behind him and Backstab.
A Visceral with Firepaper will take off huge chunks of his health, if you manage to use a Oil Urn before the party it's even better.

At least for the chalice version, wiping out the first wave of spiders is worth it in my experience, since rom just sits there and does fuck all during that part anyway, you can just take your sweet time dispatching them, and then that's fewer to deal with later.

Yeah, but in many games that would just be a fluff thing that would be reflected in the item's directly displayed stats. Instead it's an actual mechanic that you can only figure out by testing it, and finding that even though the axe has a higher listed damage rating it does less damage to most early enemies.

On my first playthrough Gascoine was actually by far the hardest boss of the game for me.
The game just didn't click. I didn't understand what wasn't working. I was at it the entire day and plowed through dozens upon dozens of tries.

I have no idea why but Blood Starved Beast took me more tries than any other boss on my first playthrough. Which is fucked up because he's not actually hard at all, but for some reason he slapped my shit for like two hours before I beat him.
I beat Gascoigne on like my third attempt, and most of the other bosses that are usually considered hard in around the same number of tries.

A lot of people make the mistake of using antidotes to stop poison and blood vials to replenish their health in quick succession, but in reality that will just lead you to getting attacked and thus poisoned again. When you're poisoned just use a blood vial and keep fighting. This made his 3rd phase trivial since you don't really need to worry about getting poisoned at that point. Poison decreases your health very slowly. It's basically there to bait people into fucking up.
Also, threaded cane is your friend.

I always hated when people threw this line of reasoning out for advocating that games should be made simpler and easier. Movies and books DO require some level of skill to partake in. A movie can have themes and concepts that are far above the viewer's head, or a convoluted plot full of twists and turns that the average person might not be able to keep up with. Same thing for books, in addition to needing to have some semblance of literacy as well as a decent vocabulary for anything more highbrow than what you find in the teen novel section at the local book store.
