Yeah, the combat is easily the worst part about the game. You can give your teammates commands and do special formations, but for the most part its basically just create a combo before battle starts then use it repeatedly while throwing in strong attacks here and there that cost points.
But the rest of the game is really good. If you are willing to overlook the bland combat, its definitely worth your time for everything else.

I actually spent my time on multiple playthroughs to recruit EVERY PERSON in the game.
And wow.. this game has a amazing town... even it's the only town in the game... every person in the game has a fucking name and can be recruited. Everyone is unique.
There's really no game quite like it. I'm amazed that most gaming journalists gave a 7 when this shit deserves a 9 at least.
Man, its so annoying that you basically can't recruit Elwen until the post game unless you grind.
Shes like 10-15 levels higher than you will be at the endgame so fighting her straight is a difficult proposition.
But shes also immune to status effects so unlike Gerald you can't cheese her with poison.

Its ambiguous about how much of the original person is left in a host body. Lucian as far as we can tell is 100% the silver dragon, but we have no idea how much Ridley is still Ridley,

Also, it seems it was Aphelion who decided to oppose the cycle while Quasar still wants to continue it, which would make it unlikely that Quasar as Elwen decided to end it.
I suppose this argument comes down to how much of the host is still left when the dragon takes over.

Well, in the cutscene before the in the Non-human path final boss, Ridley's voice has this echo effect on it.
But in the Non-human ending, JACK has the echo effect on his voice instead while Ridley's voice is normal.
If that echo is basically saying that this person is Quasar's host, then Jack might have become the host instead somehow instead of Ridley.
If so, then it might be a similar situation with Elwen and Alfred. She was originally Quasar's host but rebelled against it and Alfred decided to become Quasar's host instead.

We never learn how separate Lucian the vessel could be from Aphelion, and Ridley even contemplated it (I had already decided to go and face my destiny. But, before I left... I had to know that I was still human. I needed to know that I hadn't completely lost my humanity...).
Either the death/slumber of all dragons + Jack's interference allowed Ridley to retain her self, or Tottaus is about to get the second coming of Alfred (Ridley) and Elwen (Jack).
One thing that made me sad was that Jack's voltys all sucked. There was no reason to ever use them over other members voltys who had them.
I felt they should have done sorta what they did in valkyrie profile where they get better as the game progresses. At first its weak but by the end of the game its super stronk.
Also I thought it was kinda wierd that the human path had unique music for the final boss but the nonhuman path had the opening song for its music.

If Lucian the human entered the City of White Nights centuries ago to begin the era of Aphelion, there may or may not have been a change in Quasar's vessel once Quasar himself is forced to snooze. Also, any humans of this previous era of Quasar would have been wiped, thus no Alfred bloodline. Elwen's armor being centuries old may be a separate fact from Elwen's age as well (unless I missed a line where she herself was centuries old).

I would love for a PS3/4 remaster if it fixed a few problems.

Since there is only 1 permanent save point in the game it's obnoxious as hell that you have to wait until around 1am to save the game since entering your house at an earlier time can prematurely trigger story progression.

You can technically rest in your bed to fast-forward the time to 7am but that also runs the risk of triggering story progression. Being able to rest at the inn and sleep until whatever time you want would make recruiting several character a helluva lot less annoying.

There is no logical reason to rest at the inn when your house is literally in the same street. I don't think there's a single RPG anywhere in which there's a town where both inn and the protagonist's own house is available to you that allows you to sleep at the inn.
It's just a tremendous violation of common sense.
Great RPG simply because you can go around kicking people and starting fights with literally anyone.

I was a little sad kicking plot important character didn't do much but summon regular enemies.
Game was ahead of it's time. PS2 truly had the best jrpgs and games in general.

Entering your house can trigger story progression, which could lock out certain potential party members until after whatever story events are finished(which can be anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours).
Since the save point is also inside your house entering it can potentially prevent you from being able to save the game unless that story segment has a temporary save point.
"Resting at the inn" was just an example of something that could give time manipulation to the player without resorting to entering your house. Anything that would speed up time would be acceptable, even a Chrono Cross style fast-forward ability.

Based on raw stats she's one of the best, but definitely not the best based on moveset and aggressive AI. It's why everyone says Elwen is so good, because even though her stats aren't the absolute top tier her AI is aggressive as FUCK, she is full berserker mode at all times and usually staggers every enemy to death, yet still knows how to not get fucked by enemies that are too strong for that shit. Technically the strongest should be that ogre with 9999 HP and cap STR at low levels, but his AI is so dogshit he's actually shit tier., he will repeatedly run into strong enemy attacks and kill himself without ever attacking.

Her rune magic was solid as fuck, it did very high damage, her AI was good and she was pretty smart about dodging and avoiding enemy rushes. Elwen/Leona/Miranda is a very good party comp in my experience, Miranda seems to focus more on healing than the old man so I consider her better than him, also a QT.
