Are you just not familiar with SNK or something? SNK is not and never has been known for their 3D graphics. In fact, they have notoriously SHIT 3D graphics. That is the legacy of SNK. On top of that you even have the director of the game giving an interview to Famitsu where he just flat out says the team is shit at 3D.

There is a difference between lack of talent and lack of caring. SNK is lacking 3D talent, it's not that they're just shitting out a game as cheaply as possible. If they wanted it to be cheap, it wouldn't have a 50 character roster and they wouldn't be working on it for over two years, they would have done what Capcom did and shit out like 6 teams in a 16 month dev cycle.

Considering XII and XIII nearly fucking bankrupted the company and sprites were not doing them any favors, no, it really isn't. You're an idiot if you think leaving sprites means they don't care about making good games anymore. If anything, forcing themselves to LEARN a new medium means they care more, since it would be more work to do this than it would to stick with what they know.

Their weakness is texturing.

And Samurai Shodown Sen was garbage because it played like garbage (they were trying too hard to emulate Soul Calibur). This game is still a 2D fighting game.

An anti air doesn't have to reach very high vertically, anon. Because Kula shoots forward very quickly, you'd easily get under most jumping attacks leaving your opponent to fall on the ice behind you. As mentioned depending on the other properties of the super itself, it can fulfill that use but also do more giving Kula more utility.

Most KOF characters play pretty different, although a good third of the cast in all of KOF ever plays somewhat similarly to another character.
For SNK, it's actually not too hard to have 50 characters that play differently.
Go play 2002UM, a game with almost 60 characters (and ignore the three literal Kyo clones from a time when SNK shat up the story).

And what happened since that "shady" Chinese company bought out SNK? No more mobile games, they left the Pachi business forever, there's a new KoF game being made with one of the biggest rosters in the entire series and it's not even a dream match, a TON of old SNK staff came back and rejoined SNK (pretty much everyone who stayed in video games after leaving SNK returned), and the Chinese overlords say they want to expand SNK's IP's into as many directions as possible and practically announced that the entirety of SNK's presence was not going to be limited to KoF and nothing else.

The buyout has been the best thing to happen to SNK in over a fucking decade. You really don't understand how much the Chinese absolutely fucking love and worship SNK. It's not like it went to some money hungry cash grab company that doesn't care about the IP and just wants to make money on whatever they can, the Chinese fucking cherish SNK's work. You can play 98 on Steam or Fightcade, that's probably the most beginner friendly, popular KoF. The updated re-release of 98 is not very populated though, so you may have to get some friends if you want to play it, while fightcade is a lot more popular, but only features vanilla 98.

It has to do with China's still alive and thriving arcade scene. 97 is a game that is basically at its core just as fundamentally solid and smart as 98 is, but it's broken enough that in the arcades you don't need to be a god to steal a game from people. When every game has money on the line, even small amounts, having a chance to survive is really amazing. Because of this it keeps every game very tense and everyone plays their hardest, and this made 97 the most exciting game to play.

98 is too solid, it's very hard to beat the gods, so most of the time players just end up losing money to the best players. It's high risk and low reward to play 98 over 97.

Japan KoF is not a very huge scene. There's a decent amount of players, but basically the only people who still play it are the die hards. Because of that, they want to play the smarter games like 02UM and 98. That way they will have the best chances of winning. It's very different in China.

This is really good news. I do hope the music guys are part of this return, though. I have really high hopes for KOFXIV now. Holy shit, despite the turd graphics, I'm seriously hyped. Will we possibly see the rebirth of th SNK side of SNKPlaymore?

Is it just me, or does KoF have some of the best walk cycles in fighting games, in that how much character they show?
Way too often when testing random character in training mode, I just walk back and forth a bit just to see them swagger across the screen.
