What went right?
It didn't.

that very positive review tells a different story.

The core gameplay is real fun. It's just a bit shallow, with only deathmatch. And it's a bit moneygrubbey.

Core gameplay is fun, but it feels a bit pay2win and money grubbing.
"Finally an F2P shooter with futuristic aesthetics!"

Everyone who cared abandoned that shitshow ages ago.

This. It's actually a good multiplayer mechwarrrior game, but the devs are just so incredibly jewish that it sucked the fun out of it for me.

>I haven't played the game yet.
Come on, it's free. Couldn't even install it before forming your opinion? It's a mech game with actual mech controls, like needing to rotate the torso and legs separately.
What's the best modern mech game?

Steam reviews aren't exactly known for their good opinions.
In any case, it's a fun game for a short while if you look past the usual bullshit of F2P stuff in it like the ludicrous amount of grinding it takes to get a mech and that there isn't much variety to the maps and gamemodes available. If you just look down a bit at the page, you can see how much of money grabbing assholes the devs are, and those packs are just only two mechs of one tier class.
MechWarrior Living Legends did much more than this and that was a mod made by a bunch of random people, too bad no one gives a shit about it anymore.

It's actually not that simple.
Most of the jewishness was done by the publisher, not by dev. But the publisher dropped the title and devs have a free reign since late 2014 i think? Things have gotten better.
People who don't know shit about the industry always are quick to blame the devs for the sins of publishers.

enjoying your gold timberwolf?
>Favourite aspect of mechwarrior was always messing with different builds and setups of the mech
>Each part requires hours of farming and may not even be that good so everyone is rolling meta

k, serious response time,
The feel and looks of the mechs are good, and the shooting itself is great. Its just that there is only team deathmatch, and CW has the worst maps.
Who thought that dota, 3-lane maps would be great??
Then all of the balance problems brought on by this big man Paul, and it sucks because it could've been so much more.
I still enjoy it and have around 15 mechs, but I wish it was deeper gameplay, and more than just tdm.

they did increase the rewards before moving to steam a couple weeks ago.
still not enough though, especially when your team blows, getting only 30-60k on a loss really puts a damper on things.

>Steam reviews aren't exactly known for their good opinions.
Lol, elitism.
Steam reviews are undoubtedly the best way to gauge how worthwhile a game is. The average is basically always more accurate to how good the game actually is than the metascore is, unless the devs recently did something dickish like up the price just before a sale so that their discount looks bigger (GTA V)
There are a lot of games on Steam that are great and have user scores to reflect that, but low metascores for whatever reason. Cortex Command and Postal 2 are a couple examples of this
