Nah man, just sit back and let nostalgia flow.
2004, 2006 and 2007 were the best years of PC gaming

I wouldn't rate vanilla oblivion that high, but modded oblivion is probably one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had and the best in the series I'm.

It did get pretty repetitive. I felt that the villages and population of Oblivion were better because there was more but the depth of the people of Skyrim was better.

Totally. Modded Oblivion is probably my most played game. Now I've lost my old copy and I've just seen that it's £20 on Steam, which is outrageous
I wish there was a modpack for oblivion or something, but doesn't introduce a shit ton of clunky elements

Does anyone else feel that games really haven't progressed much in the last 10 years but before that they progressed loads?
Comparing oblivion to modern games and there's not that much of a technological jump.
But compare oblivion to a game from 10 years before it and the jump is huge.

That's because the industry is mostly advanced and shaped enough since its creation.
I mean:
>then
Ambient Occlusion on/off
Post Processing on/off
Scripted physics
Pre-rendered cutscenes
>now
Ambient Occlusion: High/Low
Post Processing on/off
Physics based rendering
Realtime cutscenes
And so on. My point is, we went from exploring new ideas, to improving them.
>>319805974
I've felt this way for a long time, family.
>>319805991
>enemies are nearby.
The only have to be loaded. Having to kill every single enemy that is loaded in border to bash a lock is retarded.
>Search harder and repair
Search? Killing bandits/marauaders for 16 hours to find a single pieceo of non-garbage armor you mean.
>Silver
Doesn't help at all.
Go home Oscuro.
>>319805974
Huge companies have held gaming back. It fucking sucks.
>>319806298
The last two points are wrong, scripted physics happens more now than it did in the early to mid 2000s and cutscenes have always been either or, it's still either pre-rendered or using cutscene specific lighting.
>>319804713
No animation cancelling, ludicrous animations locking the character into stupid situations, minimal "combo" system, awful spells, uninspired mobs, hallway design forcing the character into a corner instead of actually challenging gameplay, no interesting story, no crafting, no economy, etc.
Make way for the best Oblivion mod.

>>319805974
Consoles are holding technological advancements in chains.
Consoles are also keeping depth and complexity from games since everything has to be played on a controller, and things cant be too deep or the peanut-sized brain of an average plebian gets overwhelmed.
>>319807785
Almost a compelling argument, there.
>>319807194
>no crafting
It has one of the best crafting systems we've seen in the past decade in that you actually have to think about what you want.
>>319807861
It's not so much consoles but publishers who own most of the talented developers.
Take a look at how everyone is sperging over how good Battlefront looks, then take a look at a modded Crysis 1. The gap is so fucking small between the games yet it took almost a decade for another game to step up to that level. Crysis 2 and 3 were mysteriously shitty games technologically and this isn't a coincidence. EA was involved in all of these games and they'll hold back gaming just so they can sell it later on.
why is installing mods for oblivion so fucking awkward
>>319808586
It isn't, all you have to do is read the readme.
And I still haven't beaten past like the 3rd main quest, it doesn't hep that I already know that its shitty
The good quests are great but they still don't make for the shitty leveling, and there's probably never going to be a decent mod to fix that
>>319805974
My main concern is that they have evolved a lot graphicaly but there is not that much innovation in gameplay and interaction, just take a look at Far Cry Primal, its the kind of game that would look very promising if you're younger or a kid, but you know its gonna be 3 buttons to do everything and scripted events everywhere that is going to get old pretty quickly
>>319807845
>Ambitious.
How?
In what ways can they be ambitious?
>>319808653
doesn't mean it's not awkward, all you have to do is read the readme for half the GTA mods out there but it's still awkward.
>>319798015

Wallowing in my poverty and misery.
I'm mad at myself because I always played it the same way. I'd beeline right to the Arena as soon as I could, it always seemed like such a good thing to do at the start. I'd love to play it again, but I don't know heads or tails about modding and the games flaws are keeping me from replaying.
Got the game installed and ready. Just adding the finishing touches to a custom mod then I'm divin' in.

Mount & Blade Warband
Most of that shit you said was retarded opinions though, or game design choices. Getting locked into animations is valid, often large powerful weapons have long animations, while low damage fast attack weapons have fast animations; it's a tradeoff between waiting to land a perfect huge damage strike at a time when the enemy is most vulnerable (and run the risk of being punished for poor timing) or use a fast low damage weapon that leaves you nimble but means the fight will likely take longer and require more concentration.
>>319810056
He probably can't help it.
Do you know how many old, sentimental goofballs raise their kids going "dawww, it seems like only yesterday when you were in diapers"?
They spend a lot of time whining about how fast time went for them too.
>>319809869
I agree but what direction can they take on a realistic (graphically not mechanically) post-apocalyptic scenario other than dead colors?
>>319799384
This applies to fallout 4 as well. I felt the lack of any sizable settlements really killed it.
>>319810865
Better models and textures, especially models. Metro looks fantastic as an example and that's in the same sort of environment. Even Stalker is a better looking game pretty much.
I have no idea where you got dead colors from though, Fallout 4 is full of vibrant colors.
>>319811195
That looks like shit.
Too much brown.
>Xbox 360 is 10 years old
>>319808186
>upgrading with limited resources is compelling crafting
Ordinarily, that's referring to actual gear crafting. Finding great items through a decent portion of the game can become ambiguous unless checking a guide.
>>319810503
>Getting locked into animations is valid, often large powerful weapons have long animations, while low damage fast attack weapons have fast animations; it's a tradeoff between waiting to land a perfect huge damage strike at a time when the enemy is most vulnerable (and run the risk of being punished for poor timing) or use a fast low damage weapon that leaves you nimble but means the fight will likely take longer and require more concentration
>that post-purchase rationalization
Protip: unengaging combat is unnecessary. It's a shallow implementation instead of anything more, like even dropping/tossing the item to get out of hazard. Yet, the possibility is as simple as allowing cancelling through half the animation.
It's just another "purposefully awful" design. There's also very little option for creativity, so playing becomes repetitive and boring.

>>319809673
it doesn't
>>319799384
To be fair, all the TES games do that, but it's what else they do to counteract the boredom that brings that sets them apart.
Skyrim tries to offset it with different scales of layouts, as per the usual, but with its better looks, it's a bit more effective at first. Emphasis on at first. But to be fair it's not hard to tell one dungeon from another if you don't just stare at a 3 square-foot texture. It's like what oblivion did, but with updated graphics and mildly better VA work.
Oblivion, like Skyrim did later, made layouts and content different to compensate for a lack of varying textures. It works pretty well, Vilverin feels different from miscarand, the imperial catacombs feel different from Mannimarcos headquarter caves. It works well enough.
Morrowind, it being when almost all of the only people who played RPG's did so voraciously, was able to use a very fleshed out lore and backstory to use not as a background to accompany gameplay, but as the support of most of the quests, main or secondary. Because of limited tech, portrayal had to be verbal at times, putting more focus on developing that feature. So it was the shit. With Todd and MK in their prime, and the old PnP nerds who created the series working on it, it was amazing. And it being ridiculously hard to beat unless you grind for 15 levels or cheat was pretty great too, nothing has been more satisfying than beating Dagoth ur for the first time with cleverness, planning, and stubborn retrying. Shit was cash. And even less texture variety existed back then. Now it's easy to look back and forgive limitations of the time, but still. Skyrim was my first TES game, and morrowind will always be the best. Oblivion is good too.
>>319798015
>remember being excited and watching Oblivion trailers at my first job
I basically fucked everything up and wasted time. Frustrating to start back at square one, but 'live and learn' I suppose.
