It seems like it could be pretty good? Most of what made the first two great was messing around with the battle system, since the item crafting wasn't usually useful enough to be worth the time and effort (I got by fine with found/bought items most of the time) and the story was maximum anime. If that's fun I don't really care about the rest.

That's fine, the worst part I can remember of SO2's combat was almost every boss fight was just having Claude use his jumping special move to get behind a boss and then double-teaming him with Claude and Dias/Ashton/whoever, so most of the really tough fights had multiple targets you had to keep an eye on. As long as the AI isn't suicidally dumb with your other characters..

Have they said if your party is fixed or if you'll get to make some Ashton/Opera-type choices? I've always seen the same characters in the little footage I've seen.

That's probably my biggest worry about having all party members in combat at once. Since the battles will be a little tougher, kind of hoping they don't bumble around the battlefield and end up screwing you over and such.

You could, but for instance in SO2 sometimes enemies would target Rena and you'd have to run over and bail her out. Which was fine with four characters (especially since nobody used mages other than Rena), but with seven you know you're going to have two, three people who can't take a hit, and they need to be able to take care of themselves to a degree.

Private Actions kind of make that pointless, since you can likely pick other characters in that role/having an ending for. Potato also views you as an older brother at the start, so there's that as well you'd have to work on via PA.

Only issue I have with the big party is that I really liked to go solo in some Tales and Star Ocean games

Before this live, they stressed how Private Actions will dictate how endings will play out, so I'm at least assuming you'll get an ending for each character. As far as romance is concerned, I just wouldn't count on it at the moment, since I don't believe they've elaborated too much about the subject. They did joke about Fidel and Fiore would be a good match for each other after their conversation with each other in this recent live, but who knows. Only a few more months to find out.

To be fair, I never really understood 3's crafting system... and it wasn't such a big deal, since you can destroy the game just fine without ever crafting anything.

The crafting system was fun if you just stopped mid game and spent some time learning it. Putting time into it was very rewarding as you could hypothetically steamroll things if you spent enough time doing it. Was also a good way of making money.
There were some unique things only obtainable through crafting too.

There are always things you can only get by crafting in SO. But it just felt much more useless in 3 than before.

To be fair 3 is the only one I've played. I was really young when I got it for my dad for a christmas present one year. Saved up a bunch of money and watched him play it for like 4 years before he let me try to play it.
I'm honestly bored of JRPGs.
I thought that maybe I was burned out, so I waited a bit, and just recently played Tales of Zestiria, P4G, FF13 (horrible idea, all 3 games are boring as fuck), TiTS, and Tales of Xillia 2, and I didn't finish a single one.
I can't tell if I'm just jaded or if JRPGs are just boring as fuck now.
I've probably put more time into Titanfall than all of these games combined.
