I don't think backtracking, turn-based combat and random enemy encounters is bad game design or are bad design choices.

That's how i am with RPGs and SRPGs. I've never finished any that got too difficult/ required grinding or challenging use of strategy (GBA fire emblems, any FFT, final fantasy 1-4) . With action games/plaformers though, i enjoy the challenge.

When Mass Effect 3 first came out, I temporarily became an internet hermit. Fearful of spoilers, I 100%'d the game on Insanity and spent a good amount of time in its (surprisingly decent) multiplayer before talking to anyone about it.
When I beat the game I was amazed. I cried over my final conversation with Kaidan and then bawled over Garrus'. The ending made perfect sense to me and I loved the twist. To me, it was one of the best video game endings ever.
Finished with the game, I went to Metacritic expecting rave reviews.
NOPE. Everyone fucking hated the game, especially the ending. I was boggled. It wasn't just normal dislike--hundreds of different websites were panning the game's ending. There was worldwide passionate hatred for the ending. Many people claimed that the ending didn't even make sense.
To this day I am still boggled. My theory is that I just missed the bandwagon. Because I was unaware of the red/blue/green endings I had nothing to get mad about. If I had exposed myself to the ending criticisms earlier, maybe I would have ended up hating ME3 too.
That experience taught me that, if you're looking forward to a game/movie, then throw yourself into it completely before other people potentially ruin it for you. Ignorance really is bliss.

Xenoblade Chronicles X's soundtrack is fine. There's only two or three songs that I would consider not good, and the region music is good enough to where you can overlook it.

I'm going to try to get into JRPGs but it seems to me that the genre as a whole is overrated. I'm going to try to play some JRPGs that interest me, namely Atlus' RPGs, SOME of the FF games, (namely 7, 7 remake when that comes out, 10, and the FFXIII trilogy, plus FFXV when tht comes out), finally finish Earthbound and the Mother series altogether, Baten Kaitos, and Xenoblade. Maybe Golden Sun too.
Seems to me that the vast majority of turn-based JRPGs are fucking shit. The only ones that I seem to like are the ones that actually try to be different from the rest.
FF as a whole seems to be overrated. I think I like the spinoffs more than the actual series.
WRPGs are overrated too but not quite as much as JRPGs.
Sonic Adventure series is fucking terrible and only the music is any good. I'm starting to think that mostly anything past the original Genesis trilogy are fucking garbage.
Platinum's games are underrated, even with its very dedicated fanbase, which I'm apart of. Like almost all of their games have undersold for what are consistently some of the greatest action games of all time. They really are one of the best developers of all time and the hype is entirely justified.
Fusion is my favorite Metroid, and blaming it for the failings of Other M is stupid. It has problems, but the atmosphere is fucking fantastic.
Silent Hill 3 is way better than Silent Hill 2. The monsters are better, the puzzles are better, the areas are better, the protagonist is better, the endings are better- it's better.

Halo Wars was a fun RTS. Not complicated, not good, but fun. Even if its only because people were REALLY bad and my friends would win 3v3s with really crappy joke strats because 90% of the time, people literally did nothing but fully upgrade their hero's special units and then build to the unit cap before attacking. Maybe fully upgrade the Arbiter or build a scarab or two if they played Covenant heros.
9% of the people thought they were clever by investing in the counter units of your hero's special units and massing them to the unit cap instead. I loved the ragequits resulting from me focusing more on aircraft while playing as the tank specialist (Forge?), flying up to their base and destroying millions of anti vehicle units that can't do shit to me. I would say only 1% of the players actually had enough of a brain to construct more than 3 unit types and were able to adapt to the game as needed.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have some of the best maingames in mainline Pokemon, and even if the post-game is disappointing it isn't outright bad other than the Maison being literally recycled from XY.
But fuck the Delta Episode. That's the worst shit.
Vats is superior in fallout 4 than 3 and NV.

Max Payne 3 is the most boring shooter I have played. Repetitive as fuck, it felt like 40 hours long and made me wish it was a movie instead so I wouldn't have to expend the effort of playing it.
Spec Ops: The Line was pretty good, but I wouldn't replay it.
BF2142 was way better than BF2.

Super meat boy and the binding of isaac are essentially incomparable. One requires you to build skill over short static levels. One requires you to be consistently not bad and get consistently moderately lucky to win not too short but still pretty short runs.
Only thing in common is edge factor.
