It's the game I can credit with introducing everything I hate about modern FF. I can still play FFI and III-V just fine to this day because they're still fun and engaging, but replaying VI is like pulling teeth because it's such a broken mess on every level and is consistently so easy that it's tedious to play.

In terms of combat mechanics, I know what you're talking about, but I don't feel it's quite that bad or responsible for what you ascribe. Characters still had their own innate special abilities, even if everyone could learn all general magic through Espers. And the equipped Esper led to specific character stat development. Extra powerful summons, abilities, and gear were more available than previous entries.
That it was less demanding than earlier entries might be true, but VII is the more definitive game that changed the course of things. Some good, a lot of bad (over time). It's so stale by now...

"Characters are all the same" is not my problem with VI's gameplay. The lack of anything resembling difficulty combined with a ridiculous amount of mechanical systems that feel tacked on solely to pile more shit on top of the game because none of them are balanced is.
It's also the first game where hitting the damage cap is trivial.
