I don't mind Lightning. She's a gruff, grumpy lady in the original who acts tough while hiding her embarassing real name, it's kinda cute.
In 13-2 she was a terrible non-entity, though.
That said, in LR I liked her monologues and introspective stuff, even if she was more robotic they at least played to that characterization and the side quests made her likeable.

So when she was a preteen, which is when such a nickname would seem cool? It probably just stuck, like nicknames tend to do, and so her family and friends kept using it. Honestly I think having a retarded nickname is better than having a retarded actual name like Cloud or Squall. Those two have every right to hate their parents for naming them like that.
