How in the fuck is Mario 3 pretentious?

This game needs more good rom hacks, though. Pic related.
>>
>>319734787
i wouldn't consider that too pretentious. just a little exploration game. kinda funny, interesting to see where stuff goes.
now, that dude's next game, that was pretentious. i normally save the word "pretentious" for people themselves but then it's pretty apt for the beginner's guide, since he just made a self-absorbed game about himself by talking about an imaginary person then getting all sad about talking about himself and being self-absorbed. how annoying and pointless.
as for my favorite pretentious game... i dunno, maybe the path by tale of tales. there aren't many games i'd call pretentious though, but those guys are absolutely pretentious. at least they provide an interesting audio visual experience, though they tend not to have any substance beyond that.

Bioshock Infinite is marketing's fault. Originally Bioshock Infinite was just called Infinite. It was a new LP where a detective investigated a flying city. there were no weapons besides your pistol, and players would use Elizabeth and her powers to get her to her freedom. It wasn't a FPS at all. You set traps, talked to people etc. Then Marketing was like, "this wont sell, tack your good idea onto something people like" so then it became a bioshock game. They add vigor's, and guns to the mix and almost removed talking completely. Then marketing came in again complaining about Elizabeth, saying she's too involved in the gameplay and how games with female hero's don't sell well. So they dumb own her to the point that the game is a giant escort mission with a person who gives you money and ammo, they were even forced to remove her from the cover of the box art.

Song bird was suppose to chase you through out the game originally, and be this epic last boss you fight but feel bad about fighting, those guys that track you by sound were originally the main enemy and filled the streets before they were forced to FPS the game up. Basically, Infinite and Bioshock Infinite were completely different ideas.

9 times out of 10 any problem you have with a video game or a company is with the marketing department. The game companies themselves don't even like marketing, but they are the ones that make sure their bills get paid so you got to put up with them.

It wasnt really pretentious. It was bretty gud meta commentary that was a mindfuck the first time I played it.

However, have you seen the person who made it? That guy is pretentious as fuck and so was that newer game he made with the fictional story about some guy who never finished a game. That shit was off the charts pretensious and obnoxious.

I genuinely enjoyed Thomas Was Alone. The narrative was clever and fairly interesting, the gameplay itself worked hard at trying to stay fresh, and the story was engaging. Never had I though that I could grow to care for little colored rectangles so much.

If you've got the spare time and cash, I would recommend it.

are we using 'favorite' ironically?

If that's the case, my 'favorite' is that game with the really low res graphics and no ability to run and the story that thinks it's way deeper than it actually is

I mean I've played it like a half dozen times over now

It had DIFFERENT NAMES EACH TIME, but still, exactly the same game

Nyctophilia, Home (no, not Gone Home, just Home), Uncanny Valley... I paid nothing to next to nothing for all of these and I still want my money back

and I say this having actually enjoyed games like Dear Esther, Stanley Parable, and even The Path which is about as I'M MAKING AAAAART as a game can get.

The game flat out admits that it's about mocking "videogame tropes and cliches" which is social commentary, which is pretentious unless can make you laugh.

Or did you not stand in the broom closet till the narrator thought you died and started shouting for a nearby person to replace the player with someone else who understands all the cliches in videogame mechanics and tropes in story telling.

I'm almost positive he used the word Trope.

are we allowed to call Braid out on its shitty pretentious story, which was shitty and pretentious enough on its surface where it appears to be about literally getting friendzoned but no, IT'S ALL DEEP MAAAAN, IT'S REALLY, IT'S ABOUT THE ATOM BOMB MAAAAAAN YOU DIDN'T GET IT BECAUSE IT'S TOO DEEP

I mean the game itself is a middling-to-decent puzzle platformer, it's the story itself that can suck a dick, and in fact does, its own, quite vigorously actually

I liked Spec Ops: The Line. I thought it did a decent job of putting the player in the mind of a person with PTSD.

I don't play modern military shooters though, so I thought it was a bit condescending how it was like YOU SHOULD HAVE TURNED OFF THE GAME, BUT YOU WANTED TO BE A HERO when I didn't come to Spec Ops: The Line to be a 'hero' in the way it meant.

A sly commentary on the nature of game design is not pretentious. Had it maybe patted itself on the back a whole lot for "being clever", MAYBE you'd have a point. But the fact remains that Stanley Parable is hardly pretentious, it's like a good indie film; it tells the story it wants to and that's it.

I couldn't have been more let down.
>>

Huh. I always figured it was meant to be tied with Bioshock, but just in a more "same universe" way like Vagrant Story and FF Tactics-12 where none of the games really affect each other.

Shame though with what happened. I was all stoked about how you were meant to be considerate with your reliance on Liz's power, else her condition could become a problem
>>
>>319741195
Do you not know how words work? People use pretentious to mean games that try-hard which can mean to just try and make a story bigger than being a little bit of fun, like just saying something personal or "important" to them. Considering how it's a relative perception anything above the lowest common denominator can become pretentious.
>>
>>319746612

Words can't just be twisted to mean whatever others want them to. Christ, do you think MILF can be applied to any attractive older woman even though the acronym literally denotes the KEY quality about them?

>That almost perfect summary of braid.

The only part you got wrong is that its actually a decent-great puzzle platformer. Nice art, great music, great gameplay/puzzles that get fairly challenging, but the story acting like its anything more than what it is just atrocious.

The guy should have just left its interpretation as it really is, friendzoned butthurt-man realizes hes creepy bitch negra.

Undertale
I fucking love the soundtrack and gameplay was ok, but story is a big letdown and I couldn't find a single character to genuinely care about. True Pacifist ending felt 500% cringy, and it seems that I have to walk long ass time to do Genocide, so I just dropped it before even fighting Toriel. The pacing is also atrocious, slow movement speed and gradually appearing text with annoying sounds; visuals switch from color to b&w which is very jarring. Game's barely worth a playthrough, but again, OST is god tier, and it did have some good moments unlike most of indie shit.
