I like reading the "greatest hits" stories but the game sounds like a slog to play

it's pretty fun in bursts.
Probably one of the most complex, non-casual, and beautiful RPGs and /v/ hates it for meme reasons.
It has its flaws and it's not for everyone though.

No, but you can get a free trial and download the client.
They now do download-on-demand (it just downloads some base files and then it downloads high-detail stuff when the game encounters it) as an optional thing, so if you just want to download it and use the character creator it might take 5 minutes at most.

It's good in bursts, occasionally I'll resub and join a corp or mission blitz and do NPSI fleets or dick around in WHs.
Last time around I faffed about in Spectre Fleet before I joined Karmafleet for a total of three days before burning out completely. I forgot how shit null was.
I need to find something fun and stick to it, when I fall back on quietly shooting red crosses for hours on end to make meh amounts of spacebucks I just lose all enthusiasm.

One of the few games that actually embraces the MMO design instead of just being a co-op RPG. I loved the few months I played it, but it just eats up way to much time.

Dust 514 players can fight to control planets in the Molden Heath region, which in turn affects the way that faction warfare works in EVE proper.
EVE players can drop orbital strikes in DUST matches.
Apparently they are planning to add more interactions (as of now it's pretty much just those two things + cross-game chat), but whether that comes before or after the ports is currently unknown.

It's not much - if you're fighting in the Molden Heath region in a faction warfare the conquest bar thing will fill up faster depending on who is currently controlling the planets.
That's a simplified and possibly wrong version, of course, it's been a long time since I dabbled in DUST. Still waiting for the PC port.

Mittani (the leader of goonswarm) needed content so accused half of lowsec of plotting to invade them so the 'imperium' (multiple alliances Mittani controls) deployed to remove them. Most of the groups he attacked refused to give content and just moved away so he went after TISHU and Snuff Box and they fucked his shit up. Pretty embarrassing since Goons like to think they are unbeatable pvp badasses and not filled with killboard padding carebears.

I only ever played it during the free month and trials they would periodically send in emails. I adored the game for about a week at a time and then couldnt stand playing it anymore. Felt the same way every time I tried it.
And I reallllllllly love the way you can make characters looks on the portraits and shit. I became really attached to those characters I made for some reason. Yet I fucking hate the skill system. 3d until I get what I want. Play for 20 hours during that period and dont improve your character at all except for a bit of money.
