Everyone has different experiences with autism. I have it and I've been able to get a job and have a relatively stable life (staying with my mother still at 29 simply because if I wasn't around paying her for rent then she wouldn't be able to afford to keep the house, due to her most recent husband leaving her.)
However, I've broken off all contact with my father because he did beat me and berate me and shit and took extreme punishment methods, and pretty much tried to control my life. I think the difference though is that he never tried to understand shit or just made assumptions that I was being purposefully disobedient rather than just not understanding what he was saying. First of all, when a court determines you owe someone damages you're billed. You (and likely your lawyer) work out a payment plan which may include having your wages garnished (ie, having a set %age of your annual wage sent to the plantiff).
Second of all, when you declare Bankruptcy you are admitting that you cannot pay your debts (which may include ones imposed by a court). It's important to remember that the courts only collect money themselves if you owe them money (say as part of a criminal, not civil conviction). In a civil claims court the collection is up to the creditors, who have to either hire repomen or go to your bank to collect their money back.
