Can we just have a civil Bioshock Infinite thread?

I thought it was really good, all things considering. The gameplay wasn't great, but it was completely serviceable and really fun at times like the sky hook sequences. The story was quite frankly a much needed advancement in video game plots, talking difficult subjects like racism, religion, politics, and even quantum mechanics. The ending is polarizing, I know, but I think it's a really poetic ending once you think about it for long enough.

>I thought it was really good, all things considering.
Considered. And no it was literally thrown together at the last minute because the project leader went insane and ordered them to scrap everything they had before and he ended up getting canned as they took whatever they could salvage to string together a coherent game, and it shows. The fact that you can be tricked into thinking that was good really just shows how bad your judgement is.

>The gameplay wasn't great, but it was completely serviceable and really fun at times like the sky hook sequences.
The sky hook sequences were the highlight of the game but they were still quite boring. The gameplay was entirely sub-par because it was either stupidly easy or stupidly hard with spongy enemies and way too many useless powers and weapons.

>The story was quite frankly a much needed advancement in video game plots, talking difficult subjects like racism, religion, politics, and even quantum mechanics.
The story barely has anything to say and even what it does try to say it completely drops for some other hotbutton topic 2 seconds later. It was literally(as in this is what actually happened in board room meetings) the Dev-Team drafting out whatever they could touch on to give the paper thin story some semblance of depth. And the "science" involved... well, just ask /sci/. I could write research papers about why Bioshock infinite's writing is bad. It's comically bad.

>The ending is polarizing, I know, but I think it's a really poetic ending once you think about it for long enough.
Nope. Just objectively false.
>>
>>319628976
I liked it considering I didn't have high hopes for the gunplay anyways. I thought the narrative was a solid attempt at subverting its own tropes.

That was my main gripe with people trying to say Infinite was "smart." It wasn't smart. It repeatedly threw shit at the wall (all of which could've been very interesting on their own) for about 2/3rds of the game before giving up and giving us the worst use of time-travel I've seen.

Oh, and LOBSTER CLAWS
>>
>>319630176
My main gripe about the criticism is that people think others liked it just because they think it makes them feel smart. The plot is well designed and is quite clever even if you don't want to admit it but it was only a small sliver of what made this such a great game. The atmosphere, music, setting, characters and dialogue are all amazing. The combat is average, not bad, I enjoyed it. Usually people who claim it's not a smart story line are people who are barely able to understand it and it makes them feel smart to bash it and pretend it's way beneath them. Are you one of them?
>>
>>319629495
I think you might just be an idiot? Maybe butthurt about something.
>>
>>319628976
splicers was what made the bioshock games feel special in a way. all you do here is fight regular guys so the game feels like your generic fps. this was my biggest issue with this game
>>

>>
>>319628976

Watch this: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fEuJVAOoAyA

Seriously, fucking watch it. You should never EVER fucking say that Infinite's story was good.

Did the atmosphere draw you in? Sure. Was the ride neat? Absolutely. But in the end it is as shallow as a roller coaster.
>>
>>319628976
>all things considering
This tells me all I need to know.
>>
>>319632094
Roller coasters are actually fun and you don't groan with disappointment the entire time you're on one and wish it were as good as the one before it.
>>
>>319631468
It is very well documented that this game was cobbled together after at least 5 rewrites. Its E3 presentation -on the year it came out- is remarkably different than what we got.
I'm not even going to waste time going into the shaky story, everyone else is doing that for me.

Infinite's strength is in its presentation, but it falls apart in virtually every other aspect.
>>
>>319628976
You've got to be kidding me right OP?
>The gameplay wasn't great, but it was completely serviceable
"Serviceable" is about all it managed to be. Bullet sponge handy-men as the big bads was terrible, "two gun no fun" weapon limit for no reason, guns were really boring, not creative at all. In fact when you go to the other timeline with the alternate weapons, they had a chance to make some really creative weapons and instead gave us a three-shot burst rifle.

>The story was quite frankly a much needed advancement in video game plots
You're just pulling my leg right?
>talking difficult subjects like racism
What did it have to say about racism? "Racism is bad, remember!" They had a few good race posters about the Irish, but there was never anything serious. Where were the lynchings? What about beatings, rapings or the word "nigger"? Racial self hatred, black collaborators? The game had nothing to say about racism that you don't hear in the first grade and none of it had any intensity.
>quantum mechanics
You mean, "quantum mechanics iz science, science iz magic!"?

why did I take the bait?

>The plot is well designed and is quite clever
In what way?
Describe how it's good because I've only ever heard and experienced how frail it is. It seems to me the idea of it having such a "good" plot is a pastiche. Only impressive if you don't look at it too hard.

You failed yo answer mine, it would take me a long time and effort to try and explain why it's good. I am not going to the effort for someone who missed the basics even. Have you even played it, start to finish, without it having been spoiled?

>>
>>319633603
Not that anon, but come on the story was shit on so many levels. When you first try to get out of Columbia you want to get on the airship, why not open a tear to the airship? Why not just tear back to Paris? Why not just tear to fucking wherever whenever? How come when you go through some tears Elizabeth says she won't be able to bring you back? Killing Booker at the end doesn't make any sense either, there's a ton of other Bookers out in other universes and the "killing Booker "A" stops all Comstocks" is just explained away by "muh constants and variables".

Why is Elizabeth's mom a bullet sponge ghost? Why is Elizabeth basically unfazed by the hundreds of people Booker blows to shreds? Makes no sense either, the game is full of shit like this and you immediately leave the concerns of Columbia after the first tear because now all that shit is irrelevant, literally a different universe. If Booker's goal is to get Elizabeth to pay off his debts who the fuck is going to pay him in another fucking universe?
>>
>>319633603
Okay I'll entertain you and assume you're being earnest for some reason.
But then you need to answer my question.

>It really went completely over your head, huh?
I was a tester. I had to play it every week day for 6 months. I understood it. It's a mess of plot-holes and contrivances.
"Quantum" twins ask alternative reality bookerstock to stop their bookerstock by taking back his daughter he forgot about and getting her to kill him at the point he became Comstock. Then they made Liz the most important character ever and Ken brutally killed his daughter figure. It's really not as complicated as first impressions would lead people to believe.

I left some stuff out, but you can pick that apart after you explain why it's good.
>Okay then, name a game with a better plot or story arc?
Why? I don't care about how it compares to the story quality of other games. I care about this game's story sucking all on its own.
Other games have nothing to do with it.
>>
>>319634108
Oh. And the DLC fucking ruined Daisy's character as a polarized version of comstock because we can't have any minorities being interesting villains now can we?
>>
>>319628976
I think I played to Beggars Wharf, to a place where the Vox? or the commies demanded me to fetch some weapons to them and stopped playing there.

Anything remotely worthwhile happens in the game after that?

This was a huge disappointment after bio1 and 2.
>>
>>319633848
No it's not bait. The art design works for the first hour, after that everything falls flat.
All the themes like racism, fanaticism or class system fall flat because the developers have no balls to explore it.
Just think about it, people are racist there but you don't hear the word nigger even a single time.
Elizabeth is awfully executed, both as a character and as a gameplay element.
She stops caring about you killing innocent people right after the first scene where you talk about it and as gameplay element she is basically non existent.

Also shit gunplay, shit weapon limit, everything hates you, plasmits are available for everyone but only you seem to use them, developers clearly didn't understand the many-worlds theory, riddles are insultingly easy, level design is bland.

It's a shit game.

I'm playing Bioshock 2 again recently.

>Can carry every weapon you find
>Each weapon is unique
>Upgrades actually matter, and have special ultimate upgrades that make the weapon far better
>Multiple ammo types, some of which completely change how the weapon works
>Tons of plasmids
>Plasmids are actually extremely important in combat
>Big Daddies are a legitimate threat besides being extremely bullet spongey
>Same for big sisters
>Both can be beat with laying traps and using the environment to your advantage, as well as kiting them around cameras and turrets
>Story isn't a bunch of pseudo-intellectual garbage involving an advanced science that nobody on the team knew nothing about
>Instead is just a story about 2 completely different extreme ideals clashing, and you trying to save your Little Sister.

All of which are absent from Infinite.

>interesting villains
>interesting
Let's not overstate it anon. It was bog standard "twist" to a bog standard "but both sides are just a bad really" copout plot that happens nearly every time some piece of media tries to tackle a piece of controversial subject matter. They don't want to ruffle any feathers, so they just go with the lamest, most say nothing about anything implementation and directly undermines any attempt to address complex human problems.

The DLC was shit, but so was the original plot.

I was expecting far worse, so I guess that's why I'm alright with it. Combat was functional, though dull. Story works mostly because the narrative structure is tried and tested. Not to mention strong dialogue and va work. It kinda leaves the same aftertaste as modern Disney.
>>
Nah, i mean, solely on the gameplay you said it yourself 'wasn't great.' And for 'wasn't great' gameplay, everything else needs to be unassailable. Which, as evidenced by people calling it out constantly, is not the case.

It's a sub par shooter, with a very reaching plot that strives and fails to hold a candle to its predecessors.

If you enjoy it you're either an easily amused idiot, or just an idiot. But congratulations on enjoying something i guess.

I'd say comedy. Junji Ito's works have long since stopped being scary for me. It seems the people in his stories inhabit a universe where completely random shit just happens for no reason at all. Sometimes people find cracks in the wall that they forcibly squeezed themselves through. Other times they're attacked by magic balloons in the shape of their own heads that want to garrotte them.

It was fine. You could tell its scope was massively cut down to get the game shipped. The setting and story were fun. The shooting was unsatisfying and the game had too many bullet-sponge enemies. The over-the-top hype for a middling shooter was strange, especially given the modest reviews later given to The New Order which was similar but better in most ways.
