Here's what I think they should've done, a modified ATB system:
>ATB gauge is present, hitting x/attacking uses up 1/3rd of a full gauge, so a combo (comprised of 3 consecutive attacks) requires a full gauge (eliminating the 'mash x to win' shit, you also have to move around/manage ATB gauge counter)
>Using an item/magic will use up 2/3rd of a full gauge to prevent majik-spamming or some shit
>You hold a button to defend but it will also stop the ATB counter (only while button is held). Also successfully defending a melee attack (the first one to hit you) will give you a chance to evade (reposition you behind enemy + restores 1/3rd of ATB gauge) OR a counter-attack (single-strike+knockback/aoe that only uses up 1/3rd of ATB gauge) by hitting triangle (reaction command for kh2-fags)
>also applies to you (hit triangle to avoid enemy counter attack/tumble backwards)
>You can defend+jump
>trying to move while defending will result in a evade-roll/dash
>Magic/ranged attacks are uncounterable
>limit breaks/summons/special attacks are uncounterable/undefendable
>Limit gauge: Successfully defending a melee attack and only that will build up the gauge
>Summoning uses up a full gauge (may either transfer player control to the esper [player controlled unit will be immovable/invulnerable while esper is out] enabling you to be the esper itself with a full ATB counter that gradually decays over time [normal attacks/magic doesn't use up ATB gauge, while esper's limit break [e.g. shiva's diamond dust] will use up full ATB] OR just your typical FF summon animation sequence)
