It's great. Heavy on the story, but the gameplay doesn't let up either. You really need to brush up on your Japanese for this one if you plan to do it without a guide, because it even has an option to search words that the characters say for native Japanese speakers. It's that difficult to follow.

I think KHHsubs did a good enough job of explaining the story in his guide. Of course I had to google a few things around the start so I knew what social systems and such that the characters were talking about. Simply put, with a good guide it's more easy to play and enjoy.

That's just your opinion. I spent a lot of time using Hand-to-Hand, it can actually be quite versatile. The gun wasn't awful, it was just too easy to play keep away. Both styles were really useful when you unlocked the skills attatched to them. So completely disregarding them as shit seems a bit silly.
As for the environmental interaction, I really don't see the point of adding more. They had a fair share of heat actions associated with different environments. They had weapons you can pick up, but why use them when you have 3 fully fleshed out weapon styles?
Ishin is a spin-off. It's clear their focus wasn't on copy/pasting the fighting styles from the mainline games. They were trying a new combo-based system. It wasn't perfect, but I'd never call it shit. That game is mechanically sound, and fun too.

Is it worth it to play 1 & 2 on PS2? I was kind of holding out hope for the HD collection to hit ps2 because if for nothing else Yakuza feels sexy as fuck at 60fps. Doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. And is it worth it to just skip to 2 as I hear that's the highlight of the series?

I actually have modded ps2 & would be playing them off the harddrive. I've only played 4 & 0 so far. I thought 4's story actually stood pretty well on its own. And 0 I didn't understand what was going on because I don't understand Japanese.

Yakuza 4 wrapped up the over-arching story quite nicely. 5 is it's own story, but uses many characters from the past games, and sort of assumes you know who they are.
