I own a pc just for emulators.
I would love to play one, but I'm terrible at strategy games. I can't even fully understand and use correctly therock-paper-scissor mechanisms of Advance Wars, I always end up using the wrong units at the wrong places and creating useless fronts while leaving important places unprotected.
Does a good Strategy and Tactics 101 guide exist? I badly need one.

Usually every newbie guide I find explains the game mechanisms, the interface, that stuff.
They *do not* explain what's the best course of action given certain conditions, how should you prepare for battle, what type of units should you create, where should you place your troops, or what's the actual role and importance of every type of unkt and how to combine them.
Which is why I'm terrible at these games, because it's not obvious for me and I end up making terrible choices.

When it comes to strategy games I enjoy the base building part, and to a lesser extent the battle itself. Grand Strategy games lack both of those, so it's just not for me.
It really irritates me that the battles resolve automatically without me influencing them, and I can't accept an outcome when I lose because of RNG, because I know that if the game had an actual battle simulation part I could probably win it. The genre just frustrates me too much.
4X games like Master of Orion 2 are an acceptable compromise.

well you don't really do any of that a lot in the paradox GSG games. in crusader kings 2 you don't really have to create units at all except for retinues, and in their case i'd say just get 60% heavy inf 30% cav and the rest archers.
as for the other games like victoria 2 and EUIV. it's pretty much the same except for artillery instead of archers.
