I think all the way up to 2009 was still ok. The problem was either when they started with the mood stabilizing pills or after their bodies adjusted to them because Mike draws expressions that have nothing to do with the character is saying or doing. Look at >>319533769 it isn't even an outlier. Also what >>319533598 said, though I think that's more a result of their success than anything. They used to have time to brainstorm and work hard writing and iterating on a joke so that it was polished. Now they're probably doing so many side-projects + running events and shit that they probably a) don't play too many games anymore and b) don't have time to workshop jokes as much anymore.

It's one of my favorites, so it's a bit of a cheat, but bear with me. Let's start with the writing. The comic is a huge wall of text, but if you actually parse it every word serves its purpose. You can tell Jerry spent his time going through it and making each sentence punch as hard as they could. The punchline is actually quite simple, but the way the joke digs deeper as it continues makes it work quite well. Now consider the art. Yes, it's quite a bit simpler compared to the post-2010 era and probably could be considered objectively worse, but the pictures actually work really well in conjunction with the text. The facial expressions each character hold in each panel match perfectly with exactly the journey they're going through. Look at the last panel, with Tycho's professorial sneer, and especially compared with the terrified whimper Gabe is showing, paired with the single tear running down his face.

IThe joke is a bit easy and lame, but you're not going to hit a home run every time, so you can't complain too much. The writing is bland and could definitely have had more care, the second panel contains superfluous writing and in the final panel the punchline doesn't really land as hard as it could. That isn't 100% the fault of the writing, but it has everything to do with the art. In the first two panels it's totally fine but look at Gabe's face in the last panel. He's kinda goofy looking which is alright I guess but the expression he's pulling doesn't match the joke at all. For the punchline to land correctly he should be holding the expression he was pulling in the second panel; how an idiot looks when he's explaining something he doesn't quite understand. But instead he looks as if he's coming to some sort of realization. Does he realizes how stupid this WoW thing is? If so, it makes him less of a laughable character and weakens the impact and intent of the punchline. The face was totally divorced from the joke, which is a bad thing for a gag comic.
