>it's still pretty good
games ain't art because I say so

Scenes are stolen from Blue Velvet, pleb.
>>
Silent Hill thread?
>>
Silent Hill 1-3 are just so good. I really haven't enjoyed a survival horror as much since those games were released. The genre is just so stale.
>>
>no direct comparisons

I've seen them and I don't recall any scenes being repeated.
>>
is there any vidya equivalent to the thing?
specifically games that capture the fear and paranoia that your friends might be infected and/or try to kill you
other than the thing: the game
>>
>>319516714
Space Station 13's changeling mode is the closest I've come to that.
>>
What's the best thing David Lynch has done?
>>
>>319516643
The Pyramid Head rape introduction is shot for shot stolen from Blue Velvet. A movie by David Lynch. The creator of Twin Peaks. His whole surrealistic horror shtick was a HUGE inspiration for Team Silent. And that didn't originate from Jacob's Ladder, but from Eraserhead. Another David Lynch film. Sporatic monster movement and overhead passing grate shots were taken from Jacob's Ladder, though. Used in both 2 and 3.
>>
Jacob's ladder is a pretty shitty movie.
>>
>>319516904
Inspire Silent Hill.
>>
>>319516904
Twin Peaks, Eraserhead and Blue Velvet are my personal faves. Twin Peaks being the most accessible, Eraserhead, the opposite, and Blue Velvet: wtf?!
>>
So cinema is fraudulent, because big move-makers like Kubrick totally ripped off some books?
>>
>>319517309

I'd say The Straight Story is the most accessible, since that was funded by Disney
>>
>>319513119
They didn't steal scenes

They were just really inspired

>>
>>319517434
yep. if games ripped off books they could at least be on the same level as cinema but they're even lower

>>
>>319517564
Well, I was referring to the films that are referenced. And honestly, I didn't care for that one. Very much unlike the rest of his work and what he's known for.
>>
>>319517189
isn't the only similarity that someone gets raped from a closet viewpoint? I saw Blue Velvet pretty recently I fucking hated it, worst Lynch movie I've seen but I haven't played SH2 in years, so I might be misremembering.
>>
>>319517619
>>319517619
Now I love Silent Hill 1-3. More then you know. But if you've seen those films, there are literal shot for shot recreations of scenes. See >>319517189
>>
>>319517564

An old man traveling on his lawnmower isn't really accessible, it's just not weird like Lynch's other output. Twin Peaks is probably his most accessible output. Which makes sense considering it was on network television.

>tfw I played deadly premonition before watching twin peaks
>mfw watching Twin Peaks and seeing tons of scenes, characters, concepts and fucking lines of dialogue I had already seen ripped off verbatim in Deadly Premonition

I fucking love both of them.
>>
>>319517802
The camera angles used are almost, if not exactly the same. Also the overhead motion shots from Jacob's Ladder.
>>
>>319517743
>it's ok when art does it
Yeah, sure thing buddy
>>
>>319517930
Same here.
>>
The plot of Silent Hill 2 was a direct adaptation of Lost Highway's plot, so I'm not sure why that wasn't the first Lynch film mentioned. Everyone goes straight to the blue velvet closet scene for some reason.
>>
>>319517743
This. In terms of writing quality:

Video Games < Movies < Books

The only reason we aren't completely outraged over how juvenile and piss-poor video game writing is, is because video games are an interactive medium, so the story is a secondary characteristic, and also because games are usually at least 10 hours long just going straight through story missions. Harder to make a story really action-packed with twists and turns and have it span 10+ hours. Eventually it just runs out of steam.

But god damn I wish video games ripped off books. Imagine how many hilarious or actually scary Steven King books would make great video games?
>>
>>319518105
The Witcher and the story in the game is still pretty terrible.
>>
>>319517854
>>319517754
Don't you dare shit talk the straight story, that movie hits me in the feels like no other.
>>
>>319516714

It lacks the paranoia but Dead Space is literally The Thing in Space.
>>
Anyway, did the faggot who posted this thread play Planescape: Torment before shitting that thread?
>>
>>319518105
It kills me that you talk about literature as a way to elevate videogames and the first fucking thing you cite is Steven King. Please never go to /lit/.
>>
whats the name of that one fake news alert video about staying inside and not looking towards the moon
>>
Just where the fuck did Eddie get that Pizza?
>>
>>319518449
>never go to /lit/

You don't have to tell me. I don't read books. I'm a University student so I'm forced to read books all the time, both novels and textbooks. I literally can't even imagine reading for pleasure anymore, let alone becoming so well-versed in literature that I can hang with people who make literature their "thing".

But it doesn't mean I can't recognize good writing compared to bad writing. I've read both good books and bad books. I only cite Stevey because almost everyone knows King, at the very least from his movie adaptations of books. (Who hasn't seen IT or The Mist? I particularly think the latter would make a good game)

Also if video games were to suddenly start taking inspiration from books, I highly doubt they'd go for something high-brow right off the bat. They'd start low, with something the lowest common denominator would be familiar with. Like Harry Potter or Twilight or oh god I'm going to puke this idea started so good...
>>
>>319518867
Funny thing is, the old Harry Potter video games were actually good

Remember how Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets each had a game on every single platform, and there were no ports, each platform had a completely different game, and most of them were actually good?

That fucking GBC JRPG
>>
Inspiration =/= Plagiarism

Go back to school, OP
>>

I personally cannot wait for the IT videogame where I get to press X to choose which 11 year old fucks Beverly in the sewer next.

1 > 3 > meh > 2

But they were adapted from movies, not books.

Does anyone else getting that DS feeling when playing deadly premonition?
An endless journey, the prey protects their soul while the hunter hunts the truth.
A requiem solely sung for the search!
Truth is singular.
It's time to go to work, Catherine!
The search culminates here
>>
>>319519259
As I was typing IT as an example, I hesitated, questioning its relevance, but then continued in the hopes that someone would mention the Beverly sewer gangbang cumming-of-age scene.

I am not disappoint.

>>319519449
I'm Canadian, and I'm not a Lit major, I'm a Linguistics major, going into SLP. After being required to read various texts and novels beyond my choosing, and knowing I have a lot more to read in the coming years, I can't bring myself to read for fun in my spare time anymore. I used to read lots as a kid, but school kind of changed things. Now my primary hobby is video games. And look where we are! Funny how that works out. You'd almost think that there'd be a board for discussion amongst avid readers or something.

Also >Implying you're not him.
>>
>>319520096
It was never really talked about, so no one's entirely sure.

Supposedly it was like a forced "coming of age". That by doing something so vulgar and reserved for adults, by corrupting their own youth and essentially "destroying their own childhood", that they were no longer children, and thus no longer susceptible to Pennywise's antics.

But I mean, it's Steven King, so who the fuck even knows.
>>
>>319520184
Noted.

>>319520148
I mean on a large scale, like with how many games are based on movies (if not outright promoting them). Obviously there are already lots of games based on books, just not as many as there could be.
>>
>>319520096
Within the context of the story, or why did King write it?

In the story the children lose their powers after defeating the entity, and Beverly discovers that her power is to reignite everyone else's power by letting them fuck her.

King supposedly thought it would be a touching moment about coming of age, friendship at it's most primal and the magic of female love or something. But that's some ridiculous bullshit. It's a scene about a bunch of 11 year olds running a train on their one female friend whose whole character arc is about men who see her as a little more than a sex object, starting with her father.
>>
>>319520539
>>319520346
King could be fucked up sometimes.
>>
>>319520539
Oh, and they lose their powers while still lost in the sewer, including the sense of direction power, so it's conveniently fuck or die.
>>
>>319520021
>samefagging on /v/ to praise yourself

>>

Whatever helps you sleep at night, anon. I was the first person to call him out about King.
>>
>>319516904
Inland empire and lost highway
>>
>>319520698
It really says something when a guy thinks that the most satisfying way to bring to a close an arc about a group of children all having a crush on the girl is to have them all fuck her together.
>>
I actually wonder if an open world Silent Hill game could work. I mean the town has always been fairly open and explorable. In fact I wonder if that was what Silent Hills was gonna go for.
>>
>>319521515
Wasn't Downpour pretty much openworld?
>>
>>319521614
Somewhat. There were optional areas and sidequests.
