Because the majority of people online these days havent played it and those who have compared it to today's standards.
Meanwhile you have a few old fags who played it back in the day who either loved it or disliked it compared to VI.
It also goes without saying that people just have different opinions and taste.
Naturally as with most things popular; people just say they hate it to act cool on an anonymous japanese imageboard.
For many it was their first JRPG, so it left a major impression on a certain generation while the true oldfags who had been playing JRPGs since the NES looked at it as newfag shit for kids who had never played the older stuff.
It's like how today's kids think Skyrim is the best game ever and have never even played Daggerfall or Morrowind.
FFVII is a game that heavily relies on nostalgia: if you weren't at the right place at the right time at the right age, there's a very good chance you think VII is the turd it is. That being said, VII did appeal to the audience of 90s teens just discovering anime for the first time and was kind of a big deal on a technical level (despite games only a few years older absolutely blowing FFVII's visuals out of the water, but fuck it, I'm trying to defend this game right now)

But Morrowind did suck. I thought this about it even before Oblivion came out. Morrowind might have uglier character models than Final Fantasy VII. Morrowind is simply an atrocity

That's not correct. Final Fantasy 7 has tons of fans of all ages. I first played Final Fantasy 7 in 2008 when I was 12. Liked it then and still like it today.

VII isn't even my favorite FF, IX is. I just recognize that it was done well and that's why it has had such a lasting impact. After all, FFVIII was only a year and a half later and it wasn't anywhere near as influential.
