I have a settlement (sanctuary) with around 10 merchant stands ran by all lvl4 merchants, and 5 of the largest water purifiers. That accounts for about half of the money, the rest was from a mod i made that places a bunch of money and a few pieces of armor outside vault 111. I though i was going to need a mint to keep my guns and armor working properly so i focused a ton on making money. Turns out caps is basically irrelevant in the game since i rarely ever buy anything.

Just to clarify for everyone, you can 'run', but you should avoid sprinting.

Get Scavenger 2 and Nuclear Physicist 3. Until you have Scavenger 2 don't break down any upgraded guns/armor. Save them for the rare components later. Also make sure to tag any rare components you might need, so you can see what scrap is useful to you. Don't actually get into power armor regularly until you have nuclear physicist 3.
If you do that, you'll never run out of materials or fusion cores, ever. I played FO4 for about 80 hours, and about 60 of those hours were in power armor. I still have over 100 fusion cores.
Oh, right. Buy all fusion cores you see at vendors. To get the caps, sell any guns you find without enough upgrades to be work breaking down. Also carry around your pre-war money and use it as actual money.

All the rifleman perks, All gunnut perks, I've found most of the guns&bullets magazines (each adds 5% extra damage for a total of 50% extra damage), and the mods add a tone of extra damage.
Save up fusion cores. Then use it in dungeons after you get the institute generater going.
Also, just kill a brother hood of steel knight and steel his shit, only get headshots in vats or some molotovs.

I've been using my T-60 set since I joined the brotherhood 5 hours into the game. I'm in it 95% of the time and I'm up to 37 hours of playtime. Got 47 cores, 19k caps and a mound of aluminum/adhesive/steel/plastic/circuitry for repairs. You'd have to be a big dumby to go broke.

The game gives a power armor at the second quest sure, but fusion cores only become a thing you find after level 30. Unless you buy it, but I never bought a single fusion core, and at the moment I'm level 44 sitting at 35 or more fusion cores.
And about the money you can sell the equipment you find everywhere, but honestly I never bothered buying anything.

No i had no issues with the gameplay being too easy or hard at this time. I do a ton of mod building and i added some stuff i needed to do debugging. I won't be focusing on gameplay difficulty until they launch the GECK. For now I have several playthroughs going, a couple for debugging and a couple specifically for just playing the game as-is.

I use ammo I don't use as money half the time to make purchases. I have both the perk for ammo and caps found maxed and sit at around 30k caps and barely spend them, when I have 5k+ .32 ammo or whatever else which I don't use I use it as another form of payment on top of caps if I HAVE to use them... which is rarely.

I've been using the combat rifle for most of the game, I have it modded out fully and it seems to drop most enemies in two shots. I know there are more powerful weapons but I haven't needed them yet.
