Oblivion, Mass Effect 2, DX:HR, Fallout 3. Basically any sequel to an acclaimed game that most people played as their first because they used the prior game's reputation to sell to a much larger audience. They're not necessarily "bad" games, but if you say anything bad about them you just get "NUH-UH THEY FIXED IT FROM THE LAST GAME IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER" and they basically turn it into a console wars-esque dichotomy rather than allowing the game to be judged in a vacuum. They are games whose fans use nostalgia as a defense.

This was bullshit from when I was playing also. I mean the game looked amazing, but it felt like it had such little depth. I put in about 20 hours or so before calling it a day, I'm sure people will still say "after ___ it gets much better" but I'm not willing to invest time into something I don't enjoy in the hopes it might get better.

Honestly, there is some deus ex machina bullshit that happens that I feel if it didn't it would have given so much more to the story. I say do some quests here and there, but don't go out to do EVERY quest because you will be there a long ass time. Also Heart to Hearts give some really good backstory to Reyn and Riki who got fucking robbed in the game.
I'd blame a lot of that on them not having enough time to finish because there is an entire removed area and probably a bunch of other stuff that would have made the game even better.

Gen IV is probably my least favorite but /v/ almost never talks about anything other than just going "It went to shit when I grew out of it!" or "they look like Digimon!" when Pokemon always have to some degree because Digimon has a fuckhuge pool of designs.

Exactly. D/P and B/W had some of the worst flow of any RPG I've ever played. But all people do is obsess over the Pokemon game they played as a kid.
Also, while tons of people will admit that Diamond/Pearl was lackluster, they still defend Gen IV as being the best ever just because of the Gold/Silver remake. Fuck off people. HG/SS had the same design and flow problems as D/P. You just don't notice because you're too busy obsessing over your favorite game being remade and the 'amazing new feature' of a Pokemon following you.

That was easily one of the laziest things they've ever done. About 18 or so stock messages and an overworld sprite for every existing Pokemon. Doesnt matter if it makes sense for my Geodude to splash itself in water or for my Gardevoir to nibble at my feet.
I feel BW2 was a massive improvement in terms of pacing but it was still linear as shit but GameFreak has no desire or need to do that anymore because they can just shit out any Pokemon game and make themselves and their parent company fed until the end of the next dev cycle.

I've listed many times why I prefer Paper Mario 64 over Thousand Year Door. People just don't listen and go back to their 'which party member is the strongest' and 'vivian is trans' debates.
TTYD had a lot of flow problems. For christ sakes, there's like 5-8 hours of just dialogue and no gameplay in some segments (Glitz Pit and Excess Express). You're literally sitting in a locker room or train car reading text....for hours....
Paper Mario 64 already had some pretty heavy dialogue for a Mario RPG. TTYD ramped it up by a factor of 10.

I may be remembering wrong, but you only have to go through the Toy Box twice. And Flower Fields you can do everything on your first trip there.
TTYD has various areas you have to leave and come back. Just having to go back down into the underground every time you get a new gem for the door is more backtracking than in all of PM64.
Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen. The most anal of fans, either it was their first Pokemon game or they went through Jr High circlejerking over it.

My first Pokemon game was the original Red on Gameboy. Fire Red and Emerald are my favorite in the series because they were vastly improved over Gen I and II. Then I disliked Gen IV and V.
Pokemon as a series just has massive swings in quality. And it doesn't help that the biggest flaws of the series, the four move limit, repetitive combat and breeding, will never be changed.
