Why was I not granted that choice instead of a shitty robot that was programmed to believe it is my son? It is not a real human, probably can't even grow up, so essentially it's just a fancy robot pet.
If Bethesda wanted the player to have a dilemma about saving someone/something, it should have been something they had an emotional investment in.
If it turned out Dogmeat was a synth all along but still thought you as his master it would have been ten times more emotionally engaging and I only really used him in the very beginning.

There really should have been a synth gorilla companion. Locked up and experimented on, after you've gained the trust of the bio-science team and talked to them about synth gorillas enough they tell you about this prototype gorilla programmed with human intelligence. After meeting the gorilla he tries to convince you to free him. If you free the gorilla you either go hostile with the institute or try to make it look like an accident and meet the gorilla near the relay and take him with you.
