The Mei Fon and the Akira episodes and the stuff that's happening right now do stand on their own as story/character-building so it can be done. The MC controlled Iron, the pseudo rival has Copper, and there was another heroine that controlled Platinum. The plot of the first season iirc was something about the main villains trying to ressurect the Gold alchemist using some ancient artifact the catholic church was guarding. It only featured BE sequences in like 4 episodes and a ton of the plot was about her trying to keep from ever doing it again. The reason I watched the show appeared less and less frequently as the show went on and pretty much comes to a stop by the halfway point.
Also they did not maintain consistency in size very well between episodes or even scenes.
Basically, 90% of the value of that entire show is boiled down to the gif animations that float around, the context around them isn't enough to justify actually watching the show.
