Reminder that nothing is more important then TECHNOLOGY and that lack of it is a clear proof of video game devolution.

1. TECHNOLOGY
2. Art design and map design
3. AI

Everything else is not important at all.
>>
>>319417284
>gameplay isn't important at all
ok
>>
>>319417503
If the game has technology it has good gameplay, sperg.

>yeah, this game has amazing ballistics model, body damage and environmental chaos, but the gameplay is kinda lacking
>>
>>319417628
That is fully possible. You can make the technology as amazing as possible but revolve overall gameplay on QTEs. The result is a shit game.
Technology and gameplay isn't the same thing.

Agreed, autismo here either doesn't have a full understanding of what he's talking about or he's doing it on purpose to aspie out on us

Crysis had very little technology. It didn't innovate FPS genre. It had some decent environmental damage possibilities, and having better texture resolution isn't important if the gameplay is stale.

I don't understand the Crysis hate. It was a really fun game. I think it gets overlooked because people think it's just a tech demo. If you actually play it, it's kind of like a linear sandbox, if that makes any sense. The gunplay was as good if not better than other FPS's, and the powers added a nice twist. Also driving.

>>319418583
>Crysis had very little technology

Yeah, besides the fact that it was the best looking game for years after its release. Great physics, too. What are you talking about? If anything, most people ONLY think of Crysis as technology, which isn't true as mentioned above.

You're a prime example of why there's a devolution. Epic memery symbolizing the advent of social media, upscaled video game that had immoveable environments and simplistic ragdolls (with great map/art design) and there's no need to innovate because what would your kind do with better games anyway?

Go boot up some survival crafting. DO IT!

I'm not sure what technology is then. If it's gameplay and gameplay innovation, then you could just call it that instead of sticking with whatever shadowy set of ideas fits with your weird associations with the word.

Being able to do non-scripted stuff within an interactive environment. Damage models. AI. "Gameplay innovation" is impossible without advancement in the technological side of things and is a far inferior term.

How? It seems like you want FPSs to include every single feature or tech that's been invented up to the date they're released, whether it fits in the game or not. That's dumb as fuck.

I've been playing FPSs since Wolfenstein. Sure it's not the best ever, but Crysis is in no way devolutive, and is actually pretty fun, which is what games are about, right?

>>319420205
Not even that guy, but what are you talking about? I've been here since 2006 and I don't know what you're on about.

Because it traded TECHNOLOGY of MGS 2 for open world where nothing happens, asset reshuffling and literally no level design. It's a freefall in every category unless you think fultoning a goat is technology while it only serves to eliminate the need for the player to think about stealth.

>>319422390
I bet you think Dwarf Fortress has poor technology too.

Visual fidelity is the bane of complex game systems. The need to see in full detail what’s happening between characters and the environment guarantees that not much interaction is going to happen beyond destroying things or being destroyed. This is why simple-looking games are often more complex than complex-looking ones. Being able to walk, point, and shoot at things within immersive virtual reality is the perfect metaphor for how visual fidelity hamstrings what we can actually do.

Let me boil it down to a question. Which is more exciting to you: Dwarf Fortress, a hideous ASCII-art game which randomly generates and simulates an entire planet, including thousands of years of civilization, historical figures, battles, monuments, cultures, seasonal patterns, creatures, water physics, hunger, thirst, drunkenness, sleep, character moods, relationships, subterranean layers of all manner, crafts, trading, military organization, decoration, landscaping, and individual physiology right down to specific bones and organs that get damaged in combat–or the graphically updated version of Doom 3 playable on the Occulus Rift?

That's not remotely true. Of course you know this because you're baiting, but whatever.

Gameplay is 80% the product of controls; how fast and responsive and intuitive they are. The rest is abstractions like "feel".
>>
>>319422918

>>
>>319420852
>>319423185

This whole thread is a bait thread, pure and simple. Nothing else to it.

OP picked a cool but unimportant aspect of games ("technology" just means amusing little gimmicks and easter eggs that Kojima stuffs his games full of, fun but clearly not in any way essential) and pretends it's the most important thing there is, and is surely having a good chuckle at the replies of idiots who took him seriously.

They are definitely not Nikes. I have these boots. They began issuing them around 2006. And after looking at them more closely, I'm pretty sure they're Army tan. His pair is just seriously worn the fuck down.

Why am I even talking about this? This isn't /fa/.
>>
>>319423243

It is not. You're using made-up definitions.

TECHNOLOGY is things like guards noticing your footsteps in the beginning of MGS1. Little things like that. It has literally nothing to do with core gameplay, it's always just added little gimmicks.

Different picture. Look at the part in red and the breathing ports in green. Not Nikes.

>>319423629
literally everything in video games is programming.

TECHNOLOGY is when some of that programming is put towards novel shit like ice melding in real time, shot barrels leaking finite liquids, lasers being revealed by your characters cigarette smoke, etc
>>
>>319420694
Mgs3 had more technology. Mgs2 was boring corridors the game
>>
>>319424178
This.

It's little novel shit that doesn't really need to be there, but is cool anyway. Sure, a lot of time it enhances gameplay, but most often it's just something to make you go "haha, oh wow." And then you go back to shooting dudes in the ass.
>>
>>319421675
/fa/ here, those jeans are actually from h&m
>>
>>319424439
mgs 2 had better AI, even more easter eggs, but it had shittier bosses.

>>319424178
yes, that's the point, completely congruous with what i was saying. good responsive gameplay is technology, but employing it in a stale environment with lazy ragdolls contrasts it. good example are platinum/clover games. amazing character design/movement, but everything apart from juggling enemies is crap.
>>
Reminder:

Story and cutscenes are objectively bad. All games should tell story in the format of Zelda 1 and Dark Souls in that story should only be told through gameplay mechanics
>>
>>319420861
He made money from normie movies and got popular, so he had to find new goals in life. Artistic ones
>>
>>319425179

>>
>>319425073
>yes, that's the point, completely congruous with what i was saying. good responsive gameplay is technology,

No it's not. You don't know what the fuck the words you use mean. Stop being fucking stupid. You've been explained ten times what TECHNOLOGY means. It does not mean what you think it does. It does not mean programming and has nothing to do with the everyday English word "technology". It has a specific meaning in the context of games, which has been explained to you.
>>
>>319426309
>ice cubes melt in real time

>>
>>319426449
>>319426550
do u no how complex the equation for an icecube melting in roomtemperature is
>>
>>319426550
Well to be fair, it is programming, but it's programming that, in most games, doesn't need to be there. Which makes it TECHNOLOGY. In the /v/ sense, which is what we're talking about.
>>
>>319426449

I'll explain like I'm explaining to a five-year-old, since you seem to really need it.

Programming is just creating computer code. It has no special meaning, everything in a game is programmed into it, including all the normal things like menus and just moving around.

TECHNOLOGY, in all capital letters, is abnormal things that didn't need to be in the game, but were put in anyway. Normal things like menus and moving around are never TECHNOLOGY; it by definition has to be something that games normally don't bother with. >>319424178 listed examples. Ice cubes melting is TECHNOLOGY because normally games don't bother with shit like that. It's also an example of programming, but only in the sense that everything in a fucking game is. A character being able to move around, on the other hand, is an example of programming, but not TECHNOLOGY because it's essential to a game and every game has that. TECHNOLOGY is by definition something unnecessary (but cool).
>>
>>319417628

>yeah, this game has amazing ballistics model, body damage and environmental chaos, but the gameplay is kinda lacking
What is Call of Cthulu?

No, seriously. That game has some ridiculously realistic gun physics. But the general gameplay is pretty shit.

>i'm going to make up an arbitrary judgement about what is neccessary and what isn't and then call you stupid for not comforming to it

why stop there? why would menus and moving around be a "neccessary" thing when you can just slam your smart head on the keyboard and make the dot blink in your "neccessary" video game?
>>
>>319427428
Not even that dude, but you're either baiting or retarded. No explanation needed because it is blatantly evident. Only responding because I'm bored.

We are not talking about technology, we are talking about TECHNOLOGY. When on /v/, they are different things.

>he pays more than $30-50 for a pair of shoes that you're supposed to replace every 6 months either way

>>
>>319428150
>WE NEED TO PUT EVERYTHING IN EVERY GAME BECAUSE NO ONE CAN DETERMINE WHAT IS NECESSARY

This is how you sound.
>>
>>319428601
not at all. in fact your approach would mark most stuff as "TECHNOLOGY", even menus, because you do not need them to make a video game work. your definition is inherently fallible, no matter how hard you hit that caps lock.

>>
>>319429182
It actually doesn't matter if you take care of them or not. You're supposed to switch roughly every half year, something about the entire sole material just running out of strength or whatever.
