As someone who's never played a Visual Novel before, I decided to give in to see what they're like. I despise moe, is this a good starting point anyway? What am I supposed to expect?

Go play Saya no Uta instead as it's a great entry point for getting into VNs, it's also pretty short so it doesn't drag on.

Not a good place to start. Game's fantastic but WAY too long.
You should pick a smaller VN as your first for you to get a feel for how they are. Yoy might get burned out of CLannad without even reaching the midway point.
