I've been in a few of the threads, and they're not far off, considering the amount of apologists I've seen.
Every game dev team should have a guy whose sole job is to look at the current content being produced, calculate the size of the full game if that same quality is maintained, and if it doesn't fit because of hardware limitations or development time they go to the dev team and tell them to calm their shit down.
The only reason FF7 is too big is because SE has made it their goal to make every aspect of the game as overblown as possible.

We're talking about the same guys who scrapped FFXIV to remake it as FFXIV:ARR because fans didn't like it & they couldn't allow a numbered Final Fantasy fail. I can understand the game being too big for a single bluray if the world is as large as they imply & the game has as many CGI cutscenes as you'd expect in their flagship title. Pic related - FFXIV uses low quality scenes compared to the offline games, but has a much bigger world with way more content than offline iterations. FFXIII being one of those offline games with a fairly linear/small map. This is assuming they don't want to shell out for a fancy bluray disc that surpasses 50GB. Of course the decision to sell it in episodes instead of a single package, if they do that, would be purely for money.

Compared to the original? Hardly, and for precisely the reasons you've given. They're using system that they're already worked on before, and then releasing it in parts so that the game can be incrementally refined over time and have as much content added or changed as needed, and with a full revenue stream coming in as they go, instead of rushed out at once. There's no way this isn't superior, especially when Numora has so much more experience and understanding of what works.

So the expected dev + marketing costs of this are ranging from 500M$ to 1B$
If they sell 10 million copies like the original did at 60$ considering that less than half goes back to SE we're looking at financial suicide

So they expand the plot a bit. The original release literally has two AVALANCHE missions where they royally get fucked over after the second one thanks to the plate drop, and then the game immediately heads for Shinra HQ and then out of Midgar. They could literally expand the Midgar portion of the game into its own episode by making more AVALANCHE operations throughout the city, whether it be for getting positive rep (no one in the slums really believed Shinra on the whole plate drop after all), dealing with and weakening Shinra forces, or extra characterization for Jessie, Biggs and Wedge or so forth.
Turning Midgar into an actual city rather than a series of setpieces could be a pretty damn positive thing.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Yes, I hate a lot of Square-Enix's games besides Kingdom Hearts, and FFXIII was awful alongside All The Bravest. Wiped that from your memory? But the Dissidia games were great, Crisis Core was tolerable, and after ATB they got their shit together with (somewhat) better mobile games. FFXIII-2 and LR weren't as bad as the first despite being somewhat bland (although that's subjectively speaking), and in terms of game quality they got their shit together now.
Still not the same Final Fantasy without ol' Sakaguchi, and i'm not expecting the remake to be something that will blow my balls off, but that's why I won't buy this the minute it comes out. Hearing opinions that aren't solely fanboys, youtube, gamefaqs or /v/ should help spare some of my sanity on this shit.

A big part of the magic of the old games sits where the technological limits were and we had to use our imagination to fill out several lacking pieces by ourselves, making it a more personal experience. Shit graphics or ambiguous with limited sound made this happen. Nowadays everything has to be fully exposed and blatant taking away a lot of the magic. A good example but a bit extreme is comparing books to movies.

I'm skeptical, too, BUT I think there's real potential. If the story is expanded, and the dialogue/storytelling is improved, and each episode is a full 30 hour game, then it really could be the best and biggest FF release yet. I'm cautiously optimistic/hopeful.
