They tried to balance the guns. MW2 was a unbalanced piece of shit but everything was so OP that's what made it fun to play. MW3 tried to "fix" those problems and just made it not fun to play. All the weapons suck. They also nerfed the fuck out of shotguns, even moreso than everything else and I have no fucking idea why.
The PC version is rampant full of hackers. It has no dedicated servers either. And if you want to play the survival mode on PC you need to own all the DLC. Not even the console version does this.

What honestly put me off about the game the most was the art style
Everything is an ugly shade of green and all the guns look like they're made of plastic
Never mind how awful the camos look,and how they're applied to the weapons (literally the whole thing minus one part, as opposed to only on certain parts like in MW2; try any camo besides Gold on the MK14, it looks fucking stupid as fuck)
I did like the idea of splitting up killstreaks into support, assault and specialist though. I wish Treyarch would've put that in their own games.
Anyway, BO2 is best COD imo.

Back then CoD was just one of many WW2 shooters. I played Medal of Honor (also on Q3 engine) and a couple other games and never picked up CoD until 4 when the series finally did something that stood out.
Since then I haven't played most of them, just MW2, Black Ops 2, Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3 (which I refunded).
Campaign coolness:
MW1 > AW > MW2 > BO2
Mechanics:
AW > MW2 > MW1 > BO2
MW2 fleshed out what MW1 started with regards to attachments, perks, and streaks. The campaign got pretty stupid though. AW was the next big jump forward for new mechanics and it had a pretty nice campaign too. I wouldn't be surprised if AW2 comes full circle and is a straight up arena shooter complete with pickups and non-regenerating health.
Black Ops 2 had boring weapon design with most weapons in a class being close to identical in function and performance. SMGs with laser sight were stupid at most engagement distances, plus it had massive netcode problems. The motivations in the campaign were unclear to me but the branching and overall result were cool.
Black Ops 3 was just a messy derivative of AW and Titanfall, with Black Ops 2's shitty weapon design. The campaign was nonsensical. I'll probably skip the series until the next Sledgehammer game.
