You need an operating system and Windows 7 is arguably the best for gaming if you don't dual boot.
And Steam nor Windows are botnets. No data is automatically streamed from my computer to any others. Recording all data transmissions from my computer to literally anything outside my network for well over 4 years has shown me that. All my information matches exactly.
