Microsoft is starting to smarten up at long last and have some second thoughts about sinking actual core business and profit to try to prop up white elephants like a home console play. Sure they'd be happy if the Xbone somehow did well, but it's not worth fucking up vastly more important fights. Fundamentally MS is and always has been a software company first and foremost, that's where most of their profits come from. It doesn't matter what platform Office is on for example, it makes them a profit with every sale, and in fact it's really important to have as many places as possible. Microsoft is big on Network Effects, the more people that have something the more valuable it is to other people. If everyone uses Office then new people are likely to get it to because it's the standard.
To some extent that can apply to certain vidya too: if every single one of your buddies has it, you're a lot more likely to consider it if only the play with them. If it's something like Minecraft that benefits from community development then a broader base boosts that too. Shackling it to the MS platforms would not be enough at this point to give them any real sales boost but would simultaneously cost MS hundreds of millions if not billions, all profit. They need to and are no longer fighting the wrong battle.

I don't think Nintendo has ever told a dev that they're not allowed to develop a game for their system. Also, they don't force anyone to use a certain control scheme or gimmick. Tons of games didn't use the waggle on the Wii, and nearly every game that isn't first party just ignores the Wii U's touch screen as a major game component.
