One of the Silent Hill games, not sure which, the first or second.
>Find some long ass staircase going down into the ground in the middle of nowhere
>while walking down super loud and deep roar or moan comes from the bottom

Not that big of a deal and I may not remember the details of where or what game, but it happened and it scared the shiiiit out of me. I just could not go down those stairs until after a week when it was light out.

That part in Alien vs Predator 2 where a whole bunch of aliens rush you to the vehicle after investigating their hive.

I played it again recently and it was a piece of piss. However, when I first played it, it was dark, 3am, and I was 14.

Screamed the whole way to that fucking APC.

They managed to make Dead Space 1 pretty creepy once the monolith shit starts happening.

Other was that one vault in... Fallout 3 I think? The one where psychedelics were released or some shit and people went fucking nuts. The computer logs are eerie as fuck and made me shiver.

Also the OST of that game is godlike.

When I was like 16 our computer was right near the sliding glass door at the back of our house. Well I was playing Amnesia which wasn't terribly scary to begin with, but I was being chased around by some monster when all of the sudden there was a loud fucking banging and a flashing light out the sliding door. I threw off my headphones, ran out of the computer room, through the the living room, dining room, and up the stairs.

My dad saw I was playing a horror game and decided to take a strobe light and go out in the deck to scare me.

First time i got to the water section of Amnesia.
It was like 3 am, i was wearing headphones and as i slowly realized the monster was invisible and following after my splashing i got more and more frantic to get the fuck out.
Worse is after the initial jump scare/surprise of its introduction...was going into the area that had you chased by multiples of them while you had no choice but to run through a series of doors you had to open and slam closed...only to hear them slam open behind you.
The little girl yelling was real that night.

I hate facehuggers. I remember buying a shitty PS1 game. Probably the last PS1 game I ever bought that was set in the Alien universe.

The graphics were completely shite, even by the standards of the day and the game was pretty mediocre.

The facehuggers were still terrifying.

Wolfenstein: The New Order. Not really 'spooked' as much as 'Jesus Christ. Oh boy. Ohhhhhh boy. Oh no, he's not going to -yep oh ok that just happened', when there's the flashback scene, and the young private gets he skull drilled through and his brain removed while he was still alive. Those fucking screams, man, holy shit.

On a related topic, what horror games can /v/ recommend me? I'm not a massive horror fan - and the ones where you can't really fight back in any sense don't really do it for me - things like I think it was Outlast, I played for a bit and there were a few jump scares, but nothing really made me feel uneasy or on edge.

I didn't ask for this. Also the first time you actually see a monster and you're supposed to hide in a closet, then sprint out and run to the door before he catches you. Fuck. I hate jumpscare bullshit but that game made you feel powerless. I might reinstall it now.

playing silent hill 2 at age 11 or 12. even in broad daylight, i could not fucking handle it. got to the apartments and had to stop.

to this day i still haven't tried it; my only experience of then game was watchinng my brother (who's now my sister) play through it. but he played it a dozen times backwards and forwards, so i know every bit of the game. Just can't do it myself. The fucking atmosphere and music are too oppressive and give me the insane jitters.

Sequel is meh.
It has a lot more unsettling sounds, but so far its like the opposite as far as scares go. instead of that slow sense of dread they go straight into the HOLY SHIT SCARY NOISES non stop for a while until it becomes so commonplace you dont even care.

Soma is supposed to be more unnerving than scary, have yet to give it a try.

Silent Hill 1, I always played it in the dark, what spooked me was the 4th floor elevator button in the hospital
>get to hospital
>meet Bachman
>go to elevator
>2nd floor is a dead end
>go back, hit 3rd floor
>another dead end on 3rd floor
>dafuq, now I gotta go back to first floor?
>get back into elevator
>elevator panel has 4 on it

I was 9yrs old at the time, and I didn't want to go to the fourth floor, to this day I get a little uneasy when I get to that part.
>>
>>319355918
Honestly this is my favourite part of the game
It's a bit edgy, but it just came out of fucking nowhere, finally seeing them, the music, it was great.

I always got the shit scared of me by those knights in the hedge maze in ocarina of time. I hate going through a bunch of corridors with charging enemies. The well in the painted world in dark souls also scared the shit out of me. fucking bonewheels

If you can, emulate and play some older console titles for the traditional survival horror experience.

Personally, I'd recommend checking out Fatal Frame, and Forbidden Siren. But give R:E and SH a shot too.
>>
>>319352785
Shock is an integral part of being scared.

A lot of jumpscares are lazily done though, so they feel cheap. I don't think there's anything wrong with a good build-up and jump, or even something that catches you off-guard, as long as it's done well.
