Learn how to switch from reverse into forward (without losing momentum) by doing a handbrake swerve and throwing the stick in the opposite direction.
Get comfortable going backwards and recognize when it will be better to take off in reverse. Get in the habit of doing backflip speed boosts and switching to forward via the above method or jumping & spinning.
You can control the rotation of your car in the air by holding down Square/X. Get this down so you can always land on all 4 wheels. Simple but super helpful.
Remember that the only way to gain height with a double jump is to not hold any direction. I used to do front flips on accident all the time until I made an effort to get double jumps down.
On the other team's side of the field, never go for the ball when it's in the corner. Let them hit it to you so you can make a shot. If no one else is there but you see a teammate coming, you can try hitting it against the corner to pass it to them.
I always take over the position of goalie when I start closest to the goal, or when the ball is heading toward my team's side and I'm the first one over there. At the very least, if you start defending the goal, don't leave your position until the ball is a safe distance away, because others might assume you're still guarding and not watch the goal.

It depends. The game is almost entirely about positioning.
The two most likely directions the ball will go are towards/following a wall or towards your/their goal (usually diagonally unless at very close range). With that in mind and determining the direction of the ball, position yourself in a likely place to receive the ball, then knock it in to their net. Never chase, only receive after an attempt on goal or interception.
The games really simple really. Once you get good with the rocket you can do some amazing goals/saves that are way easier then they look to pull off.

It really isn't about calling out, "I got it" or "Defending." I'm Gold 2 in doubles despite rarely playing it (there's literally only one person I ever play doubles with). The key to doubles is developing a natural rotation. One person goes in for a strike, the other hangs back, and you rotate. It happens really fast so you can't really be calling it out with quick commands. If playing with randoms, if they're hanging back go for the kill and if they're heading in, hang back. Play off of them, don't expect them to play off of you. Always assume the person on your team is a retarded piece of shit, because that tends to be the case. Successfully playing with randoms (I love me some solo standard) is less about raw skill and more about filling whatever gap those retards are leaving.

Try not doing a lot of aerials early on, since you'll be most likely missing and exposing your team. Especially in random matches, this can prove to be fatal since people don't guard much.
There should really be hud indicators to show how close your teammates are when they are not visible on your screen since no quick commands where you can tell your teammates where you are. I know many times I thought I had a good shot, but my teammate had a better shot than I did and I fucked us up.
