I miss creative cases/boxart. It's all the same shit nowadays.

Honestly, without them having the silent hill ip to keep kojima in check it'll most likely end up as a retarded clusterfuck of ideas.

I just want konami to reach out to the original team members that were responsible for 1-4 to work on a new title and get their shit together.

The possibility of that happening is zero.

It was nice while it lasted (with the exception of homecoming/downpour/spinoffs)

Guillermo del Toro will keep him in check. he has a room in one of his houses that has sprinklers in the roof so that it rains all the time. he doesn't fuck around.

Didn't Del Toro just said "fuck it" and stopped trying to make a video game after SHs cancellation?

Silent hill 1+2 are two of my favorite games of all time and I played them at release but I could never get into 3. I tried playing it on 4 separate occasions over the past few years always wandering around in that mall in the beginning for the first hour or so. Same thing with 4.

What is wrong with me bros?
>>
>>319285923
By roots do you mean tank controls?
>>
>>319284386
Anyway to get the PC version of SH2/3 working with a Xbox controller?
>>
>>319285973
Not him but I don't think tank controls is what gave survival horror games their feel.

It was the cool static camera angles.
>>
>>319286010
Just emulate them. You're gonna go through a lot less work in doing so to get them to work properly anyway.
>>
>>319285971
Dunno, 3 was also great, and I got completely captivated by it, just like the first two games.
Although back in the day, when 4 just came out, it was freezing on PC roughly in the same spot every time I tried to play it.
So I gave up, but never really tried it after that. I probably should.

>>319286063
Good idea.

Static camera ranges from "ok" to "crime against humanity" depending on how the game handles directional input during the transition between two different camera angels.
>>
>>319286062
I remember one person mentioning that until dawn seemed to do good with some of its camera angles, either static, or panning across in some of the more tense parts.

I like tank controls because they make the player feel helpless and sluggish as opposed to be being able to sprint away. It doesn't always feel like you're in control

And static camera angles are cool because you can never tell what's around the next corner or see the threat clearly

I honestly don't get why people think it's bad to use these methods. They evoke that tension and uneasiness so well too

>tfw no REmake-like treatment of SH1 with tank controls and camera angles left intact

>depending on how the game handles directional input during the transition between two different camera angels

Simply switching back to tank controls eliminates this issue completely. There's no reason why any game with fixed camera angles should try and implement a type of modern control scheme like that, in doing so just creates this exact problem.

I think first person is THE way to go for horror games. I wouldn't even mind SH games being first person.
It places the player inside the protagonist's shoes, and forces the developers to make the game world more detailed, and rely less on scripted events, which the player can simply miss, because he was looking the other way.
Also this last one can be played to the game's advantage and put in some anti-jump scares in the game. Like for example, some spooky silhouette or a face in a spot the player can easily overlook, and that's ok. But if he points the camera at it, it activates/disappears, leaving the player with the knowledge that "it has been there the whole time, watching".

So? Those games were always terribly repetitive and poorly made, they just leaned on concepts and some good audio/visual design to gloss over it

Xbox Controller Emulator.
The games do recognize the controllers already, but being DirectInput games, the scheme is a bit messed up out of the box.

good one. You also need 10x stronger PC to emulate PS2 games.

Anyway, this seems like a good placet to repost the download links again:

SH4 torrent: Kickass torrents

And in case someone's once again new to this PC gaming stuff: Use a program like DaemonTools Lite to mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

First person works for SOME sort of horror.
There's so much you can do only with 3rd person and static camera-angle views, that is next to impossible to simulate in first-person. Showing what's going on behind the player, focusing the view on an important subject, obscuring the view right in front of the character... damn hard to do in FP-view.
Not to mention the FP-view risks the whole game becoming a shooter.

It's not really as hard as you're making it to be. It's just really easy (and lazy) to do with a fixed camera.

...you serious? It's WAY easier to do first-person view and just wing it, than make a working, good looking and memorable static-camera angle! Especially if you're going for a Resident evil- level amount of details and memorability.

With static cameras, the game developer is literally the director of the game. He gets to choose what the player sees, how he sees it, and when. There's a very fine balance that must be observed constantly, because slightly badly placed camera may just ruin the mood or playability of the scene.

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of FP-view horror games on my favorites list, but there's a sheer oversaturation of those on the market. Partly because of how easy it is to make them, partly because it's far easier to make new players to learn the controls and tricks since the FPS genre is now so dominating.

>>319291134
>and just wing it
That's not what I said though.
>With static cameras, the game developer is literally the director of the game.
Now that's closer to what I was talking about. Static camera angles steal away a degree of freedom the player in an interactive medium.
It's easier exactly because this way the player can't miss w/e you have planned for them, because they have no control. With free look, the game director would have to use some less direct methods of manipulating the player into looking somewhere or doing something.
