Should I wait for Pascal before building a new rig?

Might as well wait and see

whose pascal?
>>
>>319273437
Yes
>>
>>319273437
Full order of magnitude more powerful than Maxwell. Yes.

Not that anything will require that much power for a long time. It'll probably raise the temp in your room by 20 degrees and take up 4 pci slots too.
>>
Unless you can find some smoking deal soon around Christmas, sure. See what DX12 is all about.
>>
no.

anybody saying yes is a retard, period. never wait for any sort of new hardware if you plan on building a computer -- you'll be waiting until you're dead. new shit comes out all the time.
>>
>>319273437
depends on what you have
>>
>>319273437
Build your rig with everything but the GPU. Throw your old one in there and wait for Pascal. If you don't have an old one then you're fucked and you're gonna waste money either way.
>>
>implying pascal will work with current PCIx16 slots
They have to go the AMD way and ditch the backwards compatibility support.
>>
>>319274229
this

i doubt you will need the power of pascal for the foreseeable future

what this anon said

>>319274229
this.
By the time Pascal comes out there will be Arctic Islands around he corner.
By the time Arctic Islands comes out there will be Zen around the corner.
By the time Zen comes out there will be something else around the corner.
OP will never build his PC.
>>
>>319274229

this. honestly a 970 is more than almost anyone needs at this point unless you're autistic and want 1440p or 120fps
>>
>>319274949
not being blind is enough reason to want "1440p" (or 4k for that matter)
1080p is poorfaggotry
>>
>>319273437

if you don't already have a decent setup, I'd say build something now, then wait for that other new tech to drop in price while the current games are still playing catch up
>>
>>319273437
Either get the best 980Ti possible or wait for Pascal, every other option is retarded and doesn't make sense unless you manage to grab bstock 970 for 180$ or something.

>Waiting for Pascal when Volta is so much more powerful

If you're going to wait do it right, why waste money on "Pascal"? Lmao
>>
>>319273437
Reminder that Pascal is 10x more powerful than Maxwell is indeed a meme, Pascal is only more powerful in terms of rendering and such, in terms of video game performance it'll be 10-30% more powerful, as usual in new gen gpus
>>
As a console user, can someone tell me what Pascal is? And what it;s used for?
>>
>>319277612
it's a new CPU from Nvidia; the makers of Arctic Islands architecture for Hybrid SSD and HDD drives projected to replace DDR4 memory when Skylake CPUs from Intel no longer bend from the pressure of PCI slots.
>>
>>319277718
thanks
>>
>>319274949
I have a 970 and plenty of stuff can't be quite maxed out completely. Damn near everything runs fine, but there are still things that drop the framerate here and there or need a couple of things turned down.
>>
>>319277718
thanks bro. im so confused with all this stuff maxwell broadwell haswell pascal... jesus how do u guys keep it all straight
>>
>>319273437
Depends. What are you running now and are you having trouble running games to the level you wish?
>>
>>319278963
> jesus how do u guys keep it all straight

We all have 4 wikipedia tabs open at all times.
>>
>>319273437
No. It's a meme, just like Maxwell.

No game will use DX12.

Never listen to
>just wait for X!
unless you KNOW that companies will use Y feature or that it's some groundbreaking tech.
It's just a marketing scam.
>>
>>319278963
It's convoluted on purpose so you don't easily understand the differences between parts. You're more likely to spend extra money on a "better" chip/card with minimal or even non-existent improvement over a cheaper one that way.

The problem's doubly compounded when you realize these companies rely on the average consumer's poor understanding of what a part's specs or benchmarks actually mean or do, or how having more teraflops or whatever compares to a chip that has more vram. Advertising is filled with meaningless buzzwords to help justify a price tag.

Wake me when graphics cards can actually handle flash's awful optimization in fullscreen 4k without dropping frames.
>>
get a 980 Ti and get a Pascal 5 years later

it's not like video games are that demanding nowadays, the huge performance leap has been done many years ago, even worse the requirements don't make any sense (ubisoft games, cowadoody) when you see ugly textures, loading times, cut content and questionable updates (fps on gta V tend to drop below 60 even on good rigs today)

so the answer is no
>>
>>319280816
Not to mention a majority of the more-demanding games are just console ports anyways, and the few games that actually require a huge PC like Crysis 3 are absolute shit.

We're at a point where a budget build will last you to the end of the decade before you have to turn down the graphics settings.
>>
I'm curious about this too since I'm still using HD5770 ;_;

I want to buy 970 but HBM looks really interesting.
>>
>>319273437
pascal sounds like paskal and it means shitting
>>
>>319280978
I had that same card until ~1 month ago when I got a new pc but with an R9 390
>>
>>319281047
I also have a 5770, is the upgrade to a 390 a big performance leap?
>>
>>319281047
I think I've had enough with ATi/AMD since I want to try PhysX, Jewworks. AMD also has no programme like Nvidia Inspector. I know that we have the discontinued RadeonPro but it's still inferior to the former.

I love AMD's support of open source software/hardware though.
>>
>>319280978
Oh shit, I just upgraded from a five-year-old 5770 this Black Friday. Went with a R9 380 since I picked it up cheap.

You should probably upgrade as soon as you see a decent deal instead of waiting. I could barely play FO4 on ultra low, 20~30 FPS, meaning it's only going to go downhill from here if you wait. And the 380 can play it on Ultra, holding 60 FPS for most of the time. Anything better will be fantastic.
>>
>>319278206
>Damn near everything runs fine, but there are still things that drop the framerate here and there or need a couple of things turned down.

The Pascal equivalent of the GTX 970 still probably won't fix it anyway.

Games like AC: Syndicate can bring even a GTX 980 ti to it's knees when you set everything to max.
>>
>>319277718
I'm pretty sure all of this post is bullshit
>>
What would Idris Elba do?
>>
I said fuck it and bought a 970.
Do you think it'll be viable to buy a second 970 and SLI them when Pascal comes out and old cards become cheap as dirt?
>>
For what purpose?! Riddle me this, niggers.
Why does every year there is some big fucking reveal of something, supposedly QUADRUPLE power increase, the tech, the future, the 800$ green per card though, the requierements of future titles skybrocket yet again etc.
You all go and win the contest of being the most goy and spending the most money on this new supposed big thing...and it never delivers. Never. Where the fuck is the result of such declared power?!Each new AAA bugfest is the same as previous one, there is no substantial increase in visual fidilety and optimisation, only requirements artifitialy increase to push the sales of said big new fucking breakthroughs in graphics and visa versa. It all boils down to buying the most expensive shitfeat of a card to tank new unoptimised ugly cashgrab.
>>
>>319282812
>Do you think it'll be viable to buy a second 970 and SLI them when Pascal comes out and old cards become cheap as dirt?
SLI/Crossfire is really questionable outside of some very specific situations. Two 970s is comparable to a 980 Ti or even a Titan X in terms of benchmarks, so you'd technically be saving $100 to $300 for only slightly worse performance if you do that RIGHT NOW.

But if you plan on doing this a year or two from now, you might as well just sell your 970 and just get a 9800 Ti, since it'll be much cheaper. If you end up buying a second 970 instead, then you've made it that much harder to upgrade since now you've invested hundreds into something that isn't much better than the future's low/mid range and that can't be upgraded.
>>
Haven't you people been waiting for Pascal for two years now?
>>
depends, do you already have a PC that can run games somewhat decently? If not just buy now.

I was sitting on a chinkpad with integrated graphics when I wanted to build a PC for gaming. I considered waiting for pascal but since there's no telling when it'll actually be out or how expensive it'll be I just went ahead and bought a 980 Ti. No regrets.
>>
>>319283519
Waiting is what people do when they're fucking poor.
>New cards release
>"Wait on a sale dood"
>Said card goes on sale
>"Whoa dude in 3 years Y card will release just wait for that lol"
Cycle then repeated Ad infinitum because god forbid these people just pull the trigger on a purchase.
>>
>>319274229
Anyone who says you shouldn't ever wait for new stuff is a retard, period.

Reminder that the first 32 nm GPU came out 4 years ago. We've been stuck on the same process note for the last 4 years, and will finally advance to 16/14 nm finfets within the next 6 months. You're not supposed to wait for every trivial upgrade, but just for the big jumps.
>>
>>319283884
That's stupid, these cards won't be cheap.
>>
>>319283964
It happens every single time there's a discussion dude.
>>
>>319283519
No?

Two years ago people were waiting for Maxwell.
>>
>>319277257
>2018
I think my 980sc will be fine until then.
>>
I think we will get jewed out hard by Pascal.

I heard "NVlink" will be needed in place of the regular pcie x16 we have to even plug the card into your motherboard.

It's just complete bullshit to change your mobo and your CPU for a new GPU, and this connector will NOT permit you to connect an AMD card.

Supreme bullshit
>>
>>319283493
>so you'd technically be saving $100 to $300
I'll burn them on PSU and upgrading the rest of PC if I do that RIGHT NOW.

I was thinking of upgrading my rig a bit later while letting videocard lag behind untill something worthy comes up on Pascal and them SLIing it.

Getting rid of 970 later is a real concern.
>>
>>319284460
>Getting rid of 970 later is a real concern.
What do you mean? If you mean you don't think you'll be able to sell it, I promise you'll make at least half your money back a year from now.

Perfectly fine if you're playing at 1080p.
But if you can afford the extra energy cost, go for the R9 380 or 280X. They perform slightly better.
If you stick with the 960, don't go for the 4GB option. Its bus doesn't let it properly utilize it, so it's just marketing.
>>
>>319285000
it's shit

Struggles with 2015 releases.

I wouldn't recommend one. Go 390 or 970 or don't bother at this point.
