I really liked one of the Nightmare albums, Ultimate Circus I think it was, pretty good songs.
The other stuff I've heard of them didn't caught my attention, but yeah, they weren't bad.
And yeah, the good thing about VK is that it's not a musical genre per se, so it's very free and people with actual creativity are able to do pretty good music.
Too bad like 99% of VK bands are actually talentless high school dropouts who don't even write their own songs and just get signed to a label that ships generic bands for the fangirls, but that remaining 1% can be pretty good, it just requires some time finding the good stuff, especially indies bands, I don't know about modern neo visual, but back in the early 00s there were hundreds of new indie bands being formed per month, it was hard to keep up with new stuff, and then finding good stuff between them all.
I never really liked Gazette, An Cafe or miyavi though, around that time is when I stopped caring about VK in general.
Older major VK bands like Luna Sea, La'cryma Christi, Janne Da Arc or Pierrot are actually pretty awesome though. And of course, Malice Mizer (although my favorite album by them is their first indies album with Tetsu on vocals)

agreed, although I like merveilles a lot too, and Voyage also has its share of annoying poppish songs ("Premier Amour").. in the end they're still catchy though, I won't lie, I like Ju te veux, that song is catchy as fuck.
Then there's also memoire-style songs in both albums (Shi no buto, Bel Air).
