To be fair, if you actually listen to the recording, you can tell the doctor has no idea better than "maybe a wizard did it???" It sounds overwhelmingly likely that her immunity is only due to some sort of genetic or structural anomaly affecting her blood-brain barrier. Even if they could identify what the cause of her immunity is - and that's unlikely, if they have no idea going in - it's extremely unlikely they'd be able to give it to anyone else.
Joel's actions were selfish, but in the grand scheme of things, inconsequential. The Fireflies were hoping for a miracle.
