They were the first Europeans to get heavily involved in African affairs, contacting the Kingdom of Kongo in the 15th century.
Relations were actually quite cordial for a while and the two kingdoms became friendly. It's why central Africa was mostly Christian even before the Scramble for Africa and we know a lot more about the Kingdom of Kongo's history than a lot of sub-Saharan Africa. Apparently record-keeping was considered fashionable after the Portuguese came.
