western movie/game writers just don't know how to make a character badass without resorting to cliches that just make the character obnoxious. it's like every badass female character adds like Donte. that, or they resort to stupid bullshit like having other, cooler characters say how scared they are of the badass female character.
for example: tales of the borderlands had Mordecai and Brick, who are basically demigods in the universe, say that they're scared of some old lady with a bazooka because telltale has hams for hands and doesn't know how else to establish that a woman could be powerful
and if you're going to make a fucking warrior woman, make her look like a warrior instead of some 16-year-old girl's self insert that can somehow throw grown men around like nothing despite looking like a skeleton with boobs. it's like having an otherwise realistic game with an emaciated 16-year-old boy with a greatsword as the protagonist: it just looks out of place.

How do they do it? It's especially noticeable when it comes to gay characters. No matter how flamboyant they get Japanese gay characters are always entertaining and awesome while Western gay characters ooze agenda.

Because the reason western gay characters exist is to please an agenda. They are added in to be "progressive" . What ends up happening is a cringeworthy sterotype for poltical reasons, not because they wanted to make a character.
Japan does have that stigma, when they make a gay character, they do it because they want to make a gay character. There not trying to appease a political narrative. So it's actually genuine.

A lot of the gay characters in Japanese media are developed by actual gay people. Some of them smack as pushing the gay agenda, but most of them are actually joke characters parodying the view others have about gay characters. Ikuhara has made a career out of it.
In the west, gay characters are mostly used to push an agenda. Much like female or black characters. 'We put this character in because it shows we care!' And usually made by non gay people. Though there are a few guys who were obviously gay and still pushed it as an agenda (holy god Scott Thompson, does everything out of your mouth have to be about you being gay).

See: Joachim Valentine, Magypsies, Leeron, Pri Pri Prisoner, Bon Clay (+ all Okama in OP). All male gays (arguable the more uncomfortable type of gay), and extremely queer. But all fantastic characters people love. Whereas I struggle to name one likeable gay character in Western media.
When you're fighting an uphill battle toward acceptance, being a stuckup cunt about it is not the way to gain appeal. When you do it like the SJWs, people are bullied into accepting your cause, which will only turn to contempt. Which is funny because the above mentioned characters would surely get bashed to hell and back by SJWs for stereotyping, despite them being incredibly well received by the straight crowd.
