Alright guys, I really tried to understand, but everyone I asked who enjoyed this game told me the same things:

This game is praised as being new and fresh but all I can see is just a game that acutally did what it should, presenting its strenghts, nothing special.

Its just really perfected towards one type of people, who gets easily emotionally attached by childrens cartoons, likes dramatic animeish endings etc. I would say if you were to rate how good the game is considering its target audience, its probably a 10/10, but for anyone that isnt into tumblrish/animeish/cartoonish/childish stories and characters, it can never be anything more than average.

Really unique and fresh gameplay mechanics. I didn't give a fuck about the characters and story, but the music and athmosphere at times were really well and expertly timed to the gameplay. The battles are really fun and every boss has it's own gimmicks, making sure it stays fresh until the end. To be honest it feels as the only "fun" game released in years. One you can just start up and have a good time due to the gameplay.
People that actually think the story is above average are brony tier autists though, i agree.

Story was alright, I love the characters though. I think killing or not killing the characters should make no difference unless you plan on doing both. People that didn't kill everyone (out of "love", not lack of skill) almost certainly watched what happened if you did, and the game references that. The gameplay is fun, but simple for a bullet hell, though it makes up for it a little by having new mechanics once in a while that don't really change a whole lot. The biggest flaw with the gameplay is that the two fights that are the best examples of the gameplay aren't available unless you choose the route you're 'not supposed' to go down.
Good game, best of September, but not worth the absolutely unworldly praise it has gotten.

As far as objective statements for it go, I'll try to do my best.
It's well-polished, has a sensible difficulty curve, and is clearly given due attention from the developers, it's a product of passion. AAA titles typically lack one, if not all of these, and Indie games are... broadly varied in these aspects as well.
Now onto pure opinion.
While RPGs in general are stale, with mechanics being all but stagnant, Undertale has an interesting perspective on the genre.
The music is praised often enough that I won't even bother.
The humour is certainly a matter of taste, I personally loved it, but wouldn't expect every one to feel the same.
The story is above-par overall, and for current titles, I'd certainly rank it highly.
The visuals are pure style over substance. Not every game needs to be 4K 120fps photorealistic [insert buzzword], as those types of "realism" focused games tend to lose relevance as soon as the technology moves on. (Does anyone actually care about Crysis any more?)
TL;DR I love it, but you don't have to, buy it, try it. Worst case scenario, get a refund.

I personally liked the concept that exp and lv aremeasurements of how emotionally detached and violently deranged you've become, rather than how heroic and strong you are.

Toby Fox is the king of scam artists.
The game has attention to detail. Theres the saying "its the little things that count" and this game is made up entirely of "the little things". 2 Papyrus calls for nearly every single room in the game with seperate undyne calls for half of the rooms, encounters that actually turn out differently depending on how you habdle them with multiple ways to spare somr enemies. Its fine if you dont like the game, but it shows as clear as day that a lot of thought and effort was put into making it.

Actual rpgs allow you to choose party members, decide want items/equipment you hold, has a currency system that allows you to purchase various kinds of items, choose how your character(s) grow, give you room to explore and experience optional content, enemies with various stats/weaknesses/attacks you have to consider and lots of other shit

In the end it I liked it because it lived up to what the demo set up despite my doubts it could have the same level of detail, had fun gameplay with just the right length and variety so it doesn't grow repetitive and some actual challenge in an alternate run and the humour had its moments too. It was just a really enjoyable little game for being a pretty humble project.
