Yes. End of discussion. No reason not to compress those precious audio files when there's a negligible difference in those 50 gigs.
>>
>>318764952
Excessively
>>
>>318764952
No. They are too small. The is literary zero reasons why any new release should be smaller than 50GB now when HDD space costs less than 5 cents per GB.

No you fucking gibbermack we, harddrives are getting cheaper gb/$ and bigger.
To keep filesize down on 1080p+ systems they would have to reuse textures and making them low res/more compressed.
What you really are asking for is to make the games look and feel worse because you autist over harddrive space when its cheaper then ever before.

fuekn end yourself
>>
>>318764952
No, they are not getting too big. They are too big.
>>
>>318768394
That's pretty cool that someone made a real life version of the save icon.
>>
You can only fit ten 100GB games on a 1TB HDD. You can only fit four 500GB games on a 2TB HDD. You can only fit two 2TB games on a 4TB HDD. And there will not be any space left for ANYTHING ELSE.

Yeah no the inflation is real.
>>
>>318764952
The file size itself isn't the problem, the problem is developers have no sense for optimization. They'll make a bloated, poorly coded game on top of a third party's engine and think everything's fine as long as it fits on a blu-ray disc and successfully turns on. And then they'll patch it on day 1.

>>318768394
This has been driving me nuts.
>>
Why can't games use file conpression like skyrim?

I mean my mods + dlc make the game 70gb total, but still the vanilla game is like only 4gb?
>>
>>318764952

When some game patches can take over a week on DSL to download, yes. Devs are letting it all hang out, fuck any compression and optimization, and it's getting really bad

I opened this topic because that was pissing me off
>>
>>318768848
Because console limitations at the time (Xbox 360) using DVD meant the game had to be under 8 GB. Now that both current consoles use Blu-Ray, devs don't give a fuck about compression.
>>
>>318769079
>implying they gave a shit because of xbox
Aren't there games that have 7 discs or something?
>>
>>318768802
This, there is no reason for games to be 50GBs when they can easy be 1/5 of that if the developers weren't lazy fucks.

I don't have too much of a technical problem with it. Yeah, it's annoying for them to take up so much hard drive space and they're a pain to patch, but I can live with that.

Here's the real problem. All of that space is probably being filled up with crap that doesn't meaningfully contribute to the core experience. It's just a bunch of "high quality" audio and texture files that look awful in-game because designers no longer understand how to use audio and visual art properly. Most of the disk space is used to house hi-res trash, not memorable experiences.

The real problem is creative, not technical.

>are games getting too big file size wise

That's the sound of progress. If we were restricted to the size of what they used back then... technology would never be as far as we are now.

As files size grows, the need for bigger storage medium also grows. Thus humans come up with larger storage like Blu Ray. And humans also come up with faster reading speed anyone who thinks 52x cd reading speed is faster than 1x blu ray is a dumb nigger who should be shot.

It goes hand in hand.

You're a dumb nigga. I bet you didn't even know every single video game since the snes days all the way till ps2 days were all compressed. Hench the long ass loading times. It takes time to uncompressed everything, not to mention even graphics were compressed, hence the shitty looking graphics.

I live in the US and my options for internet service are $60/mo for 15mb/s, $90 for 32mb/s, or $180 for 150mb/s. I've got 15mb/s which translates to roughly 2MB/s downloads which is the best speed I've had in my entire life. America has shit-tier internet, shits in Europe probably get 10x my speed for the same price. Fuck regional monopolies

Both are impossible. The ONLY ISP here forces you to buy internet in a bundle with cable and landline phone, and even then you get shit download speeds. Sure, I can go out there and lobby for them to modernize, but I'll be the only one because most shits here don't even use internet for anything besides porn and email.

It's less convenient to have digital games on new consoles than it is to have discs, but even then you get fucked because of massive mandatory installs on disc games.

I buy a game digitally, 30 gb install. I buy a game physically, 30 gb install. This generation is barely getting on and I already have to delete stuff every time I want to do anything. Every time I want to play something I uninstalled I change my mind because I have to either redownload tons of shit or delete one of the few games I play more commonly and I don't want to sit through tons of downloads and installs.

Which is funny, cuz Nintendo is also the only one of the big three that bother to fucking optimize their games anymore.
>>
>>318768802

Code has no effect on file size unless you're making a very small game (like a Flappy Bird tier iOS game). Almost all the space in a 50GB game is taken up by art assets. Textures, voices, cutscenes. Last gen, cutscenes were compressed 720p. Now they're uncompressed 1080p.
>>
>>318779759
Do the patches not get deleted or someshit? How is that even possible
>>
>>318781176
Optimize in which sense? Size? Nintendo isn't trying to be as visually or technically impressive as most other developers in terms of extreme detail and realism, so that's not surprising at all.

When they do try, we get 720p 30 fps pop in like with xenoblade.
>>
>>318770386

No, too many lazy devs coupled with international multilanguage.

Titanfall was 35gb out of 48 for audio files.

Yes and no.

Yes as in there's way too much voiced audio that takes up way too much space, and too many games are going for that BLEEDING EDGE REALISM GRAFFIX push that winds up taking almost all of the space for ridiculously mediocre results that get slathered with bloom and all manner of awful blurring that ends up sacrificing the whole thing to be muddied up textures. The over-reliance on bloom is proof enough.

No, in that they can be much bigger, and be filled with far more content if people stopped whoring graphics over content. I don't mean make pixelated retro-indie garbage, mind, but humble stylized graphics that don't take as much space, looks visually distinct, and has plenty of room for more content without needing to sacrifice a bunch of shit in return.

Imagine if someone went back in time and gave games in the PS1/N64 era 60GB of space to work with. Imagine if Insomniac of old got a hold of 60GB of space to make everything they want out of a Spyro game. Just imagine.

This thread is just mad as fuck pc.ucks shitposting because they have no games and any games they do have are poorly optimized.

If games are to keep getting larger and larger in file size, they better be well optimized and have plently of content or otherwise we get cancerous shit like TumblrTale.
Hopefully the byproduct of this is increased internet speeds and more worldwide larger storage spaces. Why are we still at GBs. TB should be the norm now.
>>
>>318783756

>>
>>318783808
it's not even the push for super realistic graphics that's leading to bloated file sizes desu. it's uncompressed audio
>>
The thing that annoys me about huge ass file sizes is there's hardly ever any good reason for them to be that size. Wolfenstein had megatextures taking up most of the space, but they look like shit. Titanfall was just all kinds of retarded with having uncompressed audio for every language. Valkyria chronicles which is 20 or so gb is literally less than a gb with the prerendered cutscenes cut out which look like complete ass anyway because they were from the PS3 version.
>>
>>318784018

Hey guys, notice how videos games have recently gotten kind of shittier in a technical aspect? (I mean things like file size bloat, long loading times, lack of depth and so on)

Well consider the following. Universities like Full Sail introduced introduced video game design courses into their curriculum in 2007. This is a bachelor's degree, so it takes about 4 years to earn. That is 2011.
Now consider this. Most games take 2-4 years of development.

Do the math and work out exactly where that puts us.

The reason video games are turning to shit is because they're being made by a bunch of fresh out of uni kids who did a game design course. Most of them don't have the technical proficiency needed to make efficient or well made games.
>>
>>318789986
Now now we all know those people dont get into real game development. It's still the same idiots making games now that have been for years.
>>
>>318789986

Here are some more interesting facts.

DigiPen added a game design course in 2008, before that it has things like engineering and computer science degrees.

Jack Baskin School of Engineering added a game design course in 2010.

Ex'pression College for Digital Arts added a game design course at the very end of 2006/beginning of 2007.

I'm sure there are plenty more colleges who introduced game design courses around the 2007-2010 range. But those are some of the biggest ones.

It's clearly not a coincident.
